High Bill - Where Do I Stand?

My gf recently took out a SIM only contract with Vodafone. £10 p/m for 500 texts and 100 minutes (to Vodafone/Landlines off-peak)
She just got a bill today for over £100. When she rang Vodafone to query it, they said there is a call of over an hour made from San Franciso to a landline (her parents number), which cost £88. She did make another call of 2-3 minutes which cost a few quid, but we have no idea where this call came from.
They said as a gesture of goodwill, they will reduce the bill by £30, as her normal usage suggests this is not a normal occurrence.
Now, if it was me I would be cancelling the Direct Debit and telling them where they can stick their phone, but she is a bit worried about doing something like that as it could affect her credit rating. Plus she is a bit nicer than me
Obviously, we cannot rule out the possibility that somehow the phone made a connection - keys not being locked and subsequently leant on or whatever.
What can we do? I said to her that we will write a letter stressing that we have not made this call. She did ask them on the phone if they could listen to the call, but they said they don't keep them stored. They said that even if it went to a mailbox then she is still iable for the connection and therefore must pay.
Anyone experience something similar?

Lucky to be offered the reduction - and as for listening to the recording of the call - thats ludicrous, of course they do not record calls.0

Is it possible that the keypad lock wasn't on and the phone called in her pocket ?
cancelling the DD would be a bad move and after the bill got passed to a collections agency would trash her credit for the next 7 years...0 -

Actually, it is not ludicrous
I have administered a telephony system in a large Call Centre and all calls can be listened to for a certain length of time, by using IVR methods.
You think if the govt wanted information on a suspected terrorist they would not be able to get this info?
Thanks for the help, though0 -

Even if the lock on the phone did fail, Shes fully liable for that call, And no they woudnt listen to the call, Cancelling the Direct Debit will mess everything up, Best option is to pay the amount.0

Recording a few thousand inbound calls where the recorder is one half of the conection is completely different from recording hundreds of thousands (millions?) of peer-to-peer calls on a network!
It can still be done.
A company of this size will have thousands of servers, ample space to store millions of wav files
Anyhow it's futile debating this point.0 -
Just to clear this up for me; I assume she was actually in San Francisco?Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0

Do you think so
The number of calls purely to their call centres would take that room and more if they recorded them all, let alone the millions of calls daily made through their network.
Is she sure she didn't make the call? Would seem strange when it's too her parents landline number.0 -

Well if this labour government gets their way, it'll not be long before every call will have to be recorded and stored.Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0 -

The labour government cant afford anything any more other than MP's second, third and fourth homes and some home entertainment.
Anyway I was being sarcastic with the "ludicrous" remark initially (sorry) - or at least trying to point out the obvious.0
