In the United Kingdom the only company with good infrastructure for delivery to people's homes is Royal Mail. They have been in the business
a long time and sometimes perform miracles and rarely make errors.

If you look at the major courier companies they have one or two depots covering a huge geographic area where as Royal Mail have an office in most towns and a number in each city.

If anything is being sent out always obtain the tracking number and check it online - that way you know when and where the item is and can plan for its delivery.

    Are you serious?

  • I work for a courier company and some of the comments on here annoy me greatly . I'm not a MyHermes courier but work for a similar company .

If you order a parcel how about you make sure someone is available to take delivery of it ? I'm bound by the company rules about leaving parcels and if my PDA says it's an addressee only then it can ONLY be delivered to YOUR address. I can't leave it in a safe place and I can't leave it with a neighbour.

I used to offer the service of allowing customers to collect from my home between 5 pm and 6 pm ( so my family and I could actually have a life ) but after getting so much abuse about the time not being convenient I no longer do this and I switch my phone off at 7 pm as I really don't want to be discussing when it's convenient for you to have your parcel delivered at 11 pm at night ! I'm not your PERSONAL courier.

I get paid 75 p per drop, 50p per drop for Amazon and the Book People not per parcel so if you have 3 Amazon parcels weighing 3 kilos each delivered I get 50 p not £1.50 and if a parcel isn't delivered by the 3rd attempt I get a big fat NOWT. I don't get a petrol /insurance/road tax/MOT allowance and I get no compensation for the wear and tear of using my own vehicle. If you're not home then I get to keep your parcels overnight cluttering up my small bungalow ...

I have to wait in each day , 6 days a week so YOUR parcels can be delivered to me, then scan them in, work out a route , load up the car before I can start delivering . Pity you can't wait in for YOUR parcels to be delivered to you.

My pay works out at around £2.20 an hour after I allow for petrol, wear and tear, insurance etc.

People get aggravated because I can't deliver parcels at a time convenient to them, I have a route to follow and it is certainly not cost effective for me to traipse back 4 miles to deliver a parcel when it's convenient to you....

If I get no reply from your house and it's not an addressee only I will try the nearest 4 or 5 houses ( which can take an extra 5 minutes ) to try and find someone who will take your parcel for you, but I'm not driving 5 miles to where you work to deliver it there !

If I CAN leave it in a safe place I will... but it's YOUR responsibility to ensure there is a safe place to leave it....

I'm so sorry to hear you have to work full time and simply can't take a day off to be there for delivery of your parcel.... but in that case... DON'T order it !

And incidentally , I've never stolen anything .

So how about some appreciation and consideration for those of us who do our best and a tad tired of being yelled at ?

Anyway,i see some quotes saying that hermes pay 45p per parcel,is this right? as i understand yodel are paying 75p per parcel.

It varies depending on the service type and area (time slot deliveries and rural areas pay more for example). They also get performance related bonuses. Hermes couriers can make decent money when they have a bit of experience, and their pay will increase as Hermes take more and more of Yodel's clients.

Yodel will not exist within a year (at least not without massive restructuring):

This should suit the working customer although I wonder if the service is expensive, will they then be available during their working week or redirect to the workplace.;)
Hermes couriers have worried about losing work due to Evening and Sunday delivery(heard through the grapevine)Hermes haven't said anything to the couriers.

It will help me, I can direct the customer who opts for super saver or free delivery(who works in the day)so never home during my delivery hours, to an upgraded evening delivery.:T
  • The cards I have to leave already state that deliveries are made between 7.30 am and 9 pm. That's for van drivers though . I always leave a message on the card stating delivery between 12 and 5 next day , along with a mobile number . Hopefully that gives them a chance to arrange for someone to be there . It's the best I can do but it's never good enough .

I'm always polite , pity customers aren't. I've been threatened more times than I like to remember .

More retailers are now demanding signatures for their parcels because it cuts out fraud ( parcels going missing ) , which is also why some retailers will only deliver to billing address , unfortunately customers fail to read the order form properly and think that by writing " leave in shed if out " couriers can then do just that . We can't do that unless the PDA says we can .

I do go out of my way to accommodate people as much as possible. But I also have a life outside of work ! I run my own business , which I fit in around the courier work ( it should really be the other way round ! ) . I have a family and we'd quite like to be able to have an uninterrupted meal occasionally !

I just wish people would think about how they are going to receive their parcels if they aren't going to be there , would make life so much easier !

ricky, even Hermes allow you to refuse certain deliveries to threatening customers.

Hermes cards are sorry I missed you, I fill in details. I'm not time banded so it could be anytime between 8am-6pm, I've been delivering for 11 years so know my route and add morning/afternoon in your area, always leave a mob number. Surprising how many want an exact time though.

I would never have a customer call and collect, asked often but when I'm finished delivering that's it. All calls go to text or message and picked up the next morning.

I have some really good customers who text if they're expecting a parcel and are going to be out so I don't waste my time. I've made some good friendships with some who phone to see if I've got a parcel for birthdays/ mothers/fathers day and happy to get back to them with a yes or no.

The customers who don't bother after cards are left or who only contact on the final "your parcel is being returned" get what they deserve, no help from me.

I have a lot of time for customers who need help, patient with helping with returns for newbies etc. but no time for customers who think you have to put on the Santa costume and climb down chimneys to deliver.

I've never been threatened and one of my areas is a notoriously bad area, I have had a few recently from the other side of the track state I'm a useless courier because I won't deliver to "Missy" when I refuse eve delivery, collection from my home or delivering to a place far away and they will complain to above.

I find it works to go the extra mile for really nice customers but stick to the t&c's for the rude and inconsiderate.

It sounds as though there are as many good/bad customers as there are good/bad couriers around. The couple who have posted in this thread are shining examples, just a shame others let you down. Having a contact number to re-arrange delivery if missed would be an enormous help if only the courier in this area would think to leave one, rather than the generic 0870 number which never gets answered.

It's very rare I'm not home if expecting a delivery but there are times you have to nip out and it's sod's law they turn up at this time as their delivery times are so unpredictable, unlike the big 'uniformed courier' vans who tend to have a regular routine/time they call.

even in RM (where in the main its a small delivery time frame) you would get asked "what time" for redeliveries
as for threats. I had from verbal, near fist fights (normally from twiglets),an attempt to hit me with the "our staff are not here to be abused" sign and being stabbed (minor stab wound)
