• Has anyone had their teeth whitened either here or abroad? How much did it cost and was it worth it?

Also, what about the home whitening kits, especially the ones that provide a blue light to shine on your teeth? Advice needed!!

Hello rubia1409

I'll move your thread over to the 'Health' board, where it can be merged with existing 'teeth whitening' threads.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

Regards

In the home kits the Blue light is just a useless gimmick to make it look like the expensive light that dentists use on the 'in surgery' whitening systems.

For all the use it is, you may as well sit with the stuff on your teeth and grin at the telly. There is more useful radiation coming off the screen than comes out of the light that is supplied!

If you want your teeth whitened, talk to your dentist about it. It is dearer, but it will work, or at least if it won't, the dentist will tell you not to bother.

Going abroad for treatments is only really cheaper for the multi-thousand pound treatment plans, which would not really be in the same league as simple whitening which is just a few hundred. But in those expensive cases, it shouldn't really be done de to the difficulty in continuing care and backup.
How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

The cost of the bleaching will include the trays and bleach unless it has been discussed with her dentist just having the trays made. If so, I assume your daughter told the dentist why they did not require the bleach and therefore could have asked what perentage would have been given??
She will need to avoid the currys and the wine whilst undergoing the process and for a few weeks after to allow the colour to stabilise. Also worth bearing in mind that the results will not last anywhere near as long with frequent use of high-staining foods.

Thankyou yes the dentist actually suggested to her that its cheaper for her to get the trays made and buy the gel herself. Her dentist is a nice lady. My daughter is a student nurse so her dentist is probably just being aware of her financial situation. I think she said the trays would cost about £80 for both but this was when she enquired last year so it may have gone up.

She could ask the dentist for advise on which gel to get when she goes to have the trays made but as she is at university she desnt see her friend thats getting the gel too often so its better timing if she can find out now then ask her friend to get it so she can pick it up the same day. Otherwise it will be some weeks before she will be back again. She can also start the treatment straight away then too
Thanx

• going abroad isn't a problem cost wise as I work in the travel industry. I just wondered if anyone had any recomendations as to where to go either here or abroad. Also does anyone know roughly how much I should expect to pay?
• Yes, I have had this done in the USA. It is not painful but uncomfortable, they put a frame in your mouth which holds your lips away from the gums. Then they paint your teeth with a gel and shine a light into your mouth and leave you for about 20 mins. They do that three times. Then you must not eat anything likely to stain your teeth for a few days (things like tomatoes, tea, coffee). It cost $500. Your teeth will look fabulous for about 6 weeks then they begin to fade. But I also use Crest White Strips got them on ebay from USA because they do not sell them here. They are like strips of sellotape with gel on which you wear for 30 mins a few days every month or so. If you keep up with it your teeth stay really white.

That's because they're not licensed in this country.
