Possibly the most sensible comment on the whole thread.

However as illegal whiteners want you to have treatments every 6 to 8 months (not a good idea for teeth or gums) and a dentists treatment should last much longer and if you keep the trays all you need to pay for is a tube of gel, once you've been assessed as being healthy enough, for a top up treatment that normally costs around £10 the pain in the wallet becomes alot less.

A new website with advise if you are thinking about having your teeth whitened and where to go if you have been damaged by illegal whiteners or sold tooth whitening training http://www.safetoothwhitening.org/

Anything which is legal to sell over the counter can have so little active ingredient in it it will not whiten teeth. It may get rid of a few stains , but a visit to the dental hygienist will do that much more thoroughly , quicker and with health benefits.

Numerous studies from the highly scientific to consumer articles on e.g. which, good morning show ,daily mail etc show all these kits are a waste of money.

This is Spam, and Sparkleywhites are a chain of illegal tooth whiteners.

The act of making someone's teeth whiter is 'The practice of dentistry' and this has now been established in case law with the case of the GDC vs Jamous.

This case has been appealed in the last few days, and found in favour of the GDC. There is no further argument. Tooth whitening IS dentistry and MUST be done by dentists.

    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

    Hi everyone,
I've been looking at the Safe Tooth Whitening site and am really interested in getting my teeth done. I hate how yellow they are, even my kids have said when playing "I spy with my little eye, something yellow".... MUMMY'S TEETH! :o:( I go to the dentist & hygienist each year and the teeth themselves are great, healthy, straight. I don't drink tea, wine, coffee, don't smoke, so not sure why they are so yellow, and I brush 3 times a day.
ANYway, my question is, is 3 years a standard result for how long they might stay white? We are on a low income so £350 would be a huge hit to take, but I'd love to have a cleaner looking smile!!
Thanks in advance for any help.

Also, does anyone know whether any one treatment's effects last longer, like laser whitening versus tray whitening? Or are they roughly the same thing?

Tray whitening is more controllable ,predictable and you don't get "fade back" as with one hit whitening where some of the effect is due to dehydration of the teeth.

The other advantage is you keep the trays so if you need a top up in years to come you just pay for a syringe of whitener which most dentists will charge around £10 for.

Most people will keep the colour for years though some need an occasional short top up treatment but with trays you only pay for the syringes to to top up.

Chat to your dentist about it ,it puts you under no obligation and they can tell you if you are suitable for treatment and what sort of results you might get.

Great, thanks Brook. I'll def. go for tray option then. Hopefully it will be really effective.
