Well as you know every dental laboratory technician needs to be registered with the GDC and trays can only be made by dental technicians http://www.mhra.gov.uk/home/groups/es-era/documents/publication/con007516.pdf.
They need to follow GDC guidelines http://www.gdc-uk.org/Newsandpublications/Publications/Publications/standards%20dentalappMarch11x3.pdf
Funnily enough someone who runs an illegal whitening company and runs a "regulator" site seems to use alot of the information given on this thread to try to bamboozle clients into thinking they know what they are doing and pay them sums of money to register with their illegal "legal" whitening service.0 -

Very confused!
If a dental technician registered with the GDC makes the trays, how is the process illegal please?0 -

This may help other readers. What is a troll?
In Internet slang, a troll (pron.: /ˈtroʊl/, /ˈtrɒl/) is someone who posts inflammatory,[1] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community.
I cannot find any examples of this here.0 -

Thank you. I have read further.
A medical device is an instrument, apparatus, implant, in vitro reagent, or similar or related article that is used to diagnose, prevent, or treat disease.
Tooth whitening is a cosmetic procedure and not the treatment of a disease or a medical issue.
Further, how can home whitening kits be sold to the public when it entails forming and shaping the trays to their own teeth i.e making a custom made tray? The same would surely apply for forming putty for a custom made tray?
I have not come across any relevant legislation about this.0 -

Insults from the medical profession! Mmm.. I hope you do not treat your patients in the same way. It is probably this attitude that drives consumers like me to alternative providers.
This is a money saving site!
I note the Pearly's home kit is back on the Boots site including the custom made trays. I presume the product now complies with safety standards and legislation requirements.
I think the products are rather overpriced and you may as well go to the dentist (a nice one), as some are offering teeth whitening for £99 now, which is excellent news for the consumer.0 -
A dentist who used to offer Zoom!
Teeth Whitening Procedures - £99
At XXXX Dental we offer the Non-Peroxide Teeth Whitening system. We also offer home kits which can be used at any time in your own comfort.
During the procedure, the whitening gel is placed directly onto the teeth, after using a liquid resin isolating medium to cover the gums. A light is then used to help activate the gel and allow it to whiten the teeth over three consecutive 15 minute sessions.
“Non-Peroxide Teeth Whitening”
Non peroxide products are bleach free (consist of 0.16% Sodium Perborate as the active ingredient ) and are therefore particularly suitable for people with sensitive teeth. When Sodium Perborate is combined with the other ingredients in the whitening formula,it becomes activated oxygen-working in a similar way as hydrogen peroxide.
With the help of the LED lamp, the Non Peroxide teeth whitening will give you a bright white smile without the sensitivity associated with high percentage peroxide teeth whitening products.
The treatment takes approximately an hour.

A dentist can safely use hundreds of drugs and materials that have potentially fatal effects from tichloracetic acid, hydrochloric acid to sedatives such as midozalam.
They are deemed competent to use them because they have studied for years the anatomy, physiology, medicine , pharmacology of the oral tissues .
They have to continue this study for life to remain registered and competent.
The tissues of the teeth and mouth are easily damaged, over 60% of people buying whitening kits off the internet experience problems. BABTAC has reported over 80 cases against illegal whiteners in one year alone.
Applying a chemical strong enough to change the colour of your tooth has the potential to damage, or even to exacerbate an oral or medical condition . This potential is made worse because illegal tooth whiteners encourage people to repeat the treatment every six months or sometimes more often than this.
A dentist will assess perhaps about 60% of people as not suitable for tooth whitening. Whereas look at some of the horrific photos on illegal tooth whiteners sites clearly shows they have provided "treatment" on people with active disease in their mouths who should never have been treated and these are posted as success stories !!
These are very circular arguments ,I'm sure very very few people will still be reading and those who are will already have made up their minds.0 -
And for those that haven't http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/dentalhealth/Pages/teeth-whitening.aspx0
