A dentist can safely use hundreds of drugs and materials that have potentially fatal effects from tichloracetic acid, hydrochloric acid to sedatives such as midozalam.

They are deemed competent to use them because they have studied for years the anatomy, physiology, medicine , pharmacology of the oral tissues .

They have to continue this study for life to remain registered and competent.

The tissues of the teeth and mouth are easily damaged, over 60% of people buying whitening kits off the internet experience problems. BABTAC has reported over 80 cases against illegal whiteners in one year alone.

Applying a chemical strong enough to change the colour of your tooth has the potential to damage, or even to exacerbate an oral or medical condition . This potential is made worse because illegal tooth whiteners encourage people to repeat the treatment every six months or sometimes more often than this.

A dentist will assess perhaps about 60% of people as not suitable for tooth whitening. Whereas look at some of the horrific photos on illegal tooth whiteners sites clearly shows they have provided "treatment" on people with active disease in their mouths who should never have been treated and these are posted as success stories !!

These are very circular arguments ,I'm sure very very few people will still be reading and those who are will already have made up their minds.

    I understand your point.

However, products sold at reputable chemists must be safe for the consumer to use. The EU has far more stringent rules than the USA.

Consumers self prescribe potentially dangerous medicines over the counter; paracetamol is lethal if you take more than the recommended dose.

We do not live in a nanny state and consumers have the freedom of choice. Many people cannot afford dental treatment when they are in pain, never mind tooth whitening.

I am delighted that some dentists have reduced their prices. However, consumers need to be aware results are not guaranteed even with the best treatments delivered by the dental professional.

Wy10 Chairside Whitening - Carried out over an hour or so at our practice, this treatment uses the latest patented Thermal Diffusion teeth-whitening technology. With reports of little or no sensitivity, unlike other systems on the market, it is a comfortable way of giving you a radiant smile in a short space of time!

This consumer would have been sorely disappointed had she paid the full price of over £700!

The treatment itself was thorough and professionally done, however the overall whitening result was not great on me personally. But that may be due to the time between each session being more than the advised 5 days (I could not go sooner due to illness). The dental nurse did explain that the results vary from each person and being a previously heavy smoker would obviously make it more tricky for the bleach to pick up. I do not believe this was down to the way my treatment was performed whatsoever as the staff were absolutely brilliant. Top marks!!!

    The same dental practice:

"I was late for my appointment, however I was not asked to reschedule, which was very kind and understanding.

However, I was not completely satisfied with the airflow sparkle clean as some of small stains that i had were never removed from my teeth. I had never had it happen before. Usually hygienists know their job well. Maybe it had to do with this particular technology. Don't know.

A complete check up did not involve an X-ray, which surprised me as well. How can they recommend any treatment without a thorough exam?

The dentist said I needed to replace two white feelings. A week later one of the fillings fell out, and I went to see another doctor as I was traveling in the US. The doctor said I had a cavity on another tooth, next to the one that my filling fell out of. She also said I needed a crown as my filling is very big and has a crack. I got a temporary filling in the US.

Now that I need to fix my teeth I will not go back to the Puresmile as they could not do a proper exam and advice accordingly."

    Hello,

I've been looking for some genuine reviews on Botanical White but not had much luck, everything I see online looks very staged or purposefully produced, all have a link to the manufacturer website...

I wondered if anyone has any experience of Botanical White products? Or, have heard any genuine reviews/ feedback?

Thank you very much for your help in advance.

It is based on sodium perborate. Sodium perborate is a chemical that the EU has next on a list to ban as it has been linked to many health problems including damage to reproductive organs. Already manufacturers have withdrawn mouthwash such as bocasan in Europe because it contains sodium perborate.

Bottom line is never buy anything off the net to whiten teeth, it will either be illegal, useless or dangerous.
  • I am also looking for a cheaper teeth whitening option. I think crest whitening strips works, but it can make your teeth sensitive.

It is illegal to sell crest whitening strips in the UK or EU as they contain over a hundred times the legal limit for hydrogen peroxide.

Therefore anyone selling them does so knowing they are breaking the law because they have no legitimate way of obtaining strips what you get could be counterfeit, dangerous and damaging you could be putting any old chemical inside you.

    Avoid to protect your health.

Yep - the abrasiveness of it will strip that enamel right off! :T
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

I'm confused, I'm guessing that's a bad thing? Yet in an earlier post (2005) someone asked if bicarb is harmful to gums and you answered "no-it's fine", why didn't you also mention the enamel stripping?

On the whole toothpastes with bicarbonate of soda in them are fine. However using bicarbonate of soda, neat, on a toothbrush has the potential to destroy enamel as basically the bicarbonate of soda is used as an abrasive to rub stain away and what rubs stain away has the potential to rub enamel away also.
