See a dentist and get the take home custom tray and gel system. No over the counter products such as toothpastes whiten. I dont think any with a light work IMHO and "power" bleaching with super strength bleach painted on in house and left for an hour or so usually still needs top ups ... with ... wait for it ... home trays ;) ... which you pay extra for normally (you also have the afore mentioned dehydration factor). So the best thing is go for the proper system right from the off rather than wasting money on gimmicks and the like. You do need to see a dentist however as it is the legal route and if for no other reason ... sensible route. Afterall who knows mouths better than dentists?? .... beauty... no sorry .. no one ;)

Quick fixes do not work imo and even if there is a colour change it is usually short lived. Whitening takes time to get good, consistent, stable results.

Hi and please can I just chime in with a question for the dentists here? In your opinions how do you know when you have reached the 'end point' with the home tray bleaching method? I've been doing this for more or less two weeks (give or take the odd day) and have been pretty pleased, but I have about four tubes left of gel and am wondering whether to use it all up or just save it for top-ups?

I think my expectations are realistic - I don't expect my 59 year old teeth to look like they've had veneers done but I do notice quite a difference - but just wondered what your views are. My sister did this and reckons that the best result was about a week after she stopped using the trays.

    Thanks!

Ask the dentist who provided the trays. This is what you pay for, their expertise.
They will advise about any adjustments that might need to be made.

I know the answer 100%. Buy a toothpaste with baking soda in it. Arm and Hammer is your best choice, they are the only ones that have baking soda in the supermarket.
I use this toothpaste because the ingredients in some toothpastes are frightening and it has the same effect of the Arm and Hammer:

£6 is a lot but this is the best toothpaste I have ever used.

hi does this actually work then as lots of toothpastes claim to whiten teeth but cant say they really make much difference?

The toothpaste market is a big joke to be honest. "ice crystals" "gel crystals" "kills bacteria" "tartar defence" etc. Its a con, some of the ingredients are frightening and harmful. A study showed that children who used flouride in their toothpaste ended up with more cavities than ones who didn't. Flouride is also toxic inside of us.

Try a toothpaste with baking soda in it, I promise, amazing. If you don't want to go for the mypure one because its £6 which is quite crazy but I love it, then go for Arm & Hammer in the supermarket. These are the only toothpastes that I have noticed my teeth very white. I recommend this one of Arm & Hammer but anyone should be ok.

Dont do any of those suggestions as they wont work. Toothpaste whatever is in it will not whiten teeth. The only thing that will whiten is indeed bleach but in a stable form such as carbamide peroxide. See a dentist. I recommend custom made trays and 10-17% carbamide peroxide used for afew hours a day ober about 2 weeks

Use any of these regularly and your teeth will go darker and more sensitive. They will wear away the enamel onyour teeth and cause irreversible damage.

Baking soda toothpastes will only remove stain not lighten teeth .

The only safe way to lighten teeth is see a dentist otherwise you are playing a lottery the consequences of which you may have to live with for life.

No toothpaste, mouthwash etc will lighten teeth. Some will remove stain and also enamel.

Tooth whitening isn't essential for health. If you can't afford to get it done properly don't do it . Healthy teeth and gums are better than White damaged ones.

I would like to see you back that one up.

Especially as you don't seem to be able to spell fluoride in this or any other post you've recently made on the subject.

Of course, I don't know what FLOURIDE actually is, so you might be right. But the fluoride you get in toothpastes is protective of teeth, and is the main reason for the fall in decay over the last 40 yrs.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
