It doesnt matter what she uses. The minute she assesses someone as suitable for tooth lightening , the minute she puts anything in someones mouth she has broken the law. There are very many methods for a dentists work to be investigated , all dentists have to have clinical indemnity and if found guilty of wrongdoing they will be struck off. However it is difficult to see what self interest which, the bbc, the guardian, the daily mail etc have in exposing unqualified people whitening teeth. It is also interesting that other countries such as australia and the us prosecute non dentists whitening teeth.

Well I think we are going to have to agree to disagree.

The EU passed the law that tooth whitening is purely cosmetic and thats fine by me. So long as the demand is there and people want it doing, its going to carry on. Whether you like it or not.

    THE END:rotfl:

Wrong again. The EU did not pass a law saying tooth whitening is purely cosmetic. They passed laws about the use of concentrations of hydrogen peroxide which is only one of several ways to whiten teeth.

In most if not all EU countries eg Germany it is perfectly legal for dentists only to use these concentrations of peroxide as part of a medical device eg in whitening trays.

In most if not all EU countries whitening teeth using whatever method, is illegal unless carried out by a dental professional and this is also the case in Australia, New zealand and most of the US.

That is the legal situation black and white. You are confusing two things legislation concerning illegal practice of dentistry and legislation concerning hydrogen peroxide which are two different laws.It is not a matter of opinion your friend is commiting an offense and breaking the law assessing people and carrying out tooth whitening using whatever method.

welshdent - you need to grow up!

this is now getting extremely boring. I will say for the last time......my friend does not use any form of peroxide or dioxide.

It will continue to be practised as I said, whether you two like it or not!

But we are not talking about peroxide or dioxide. Your friend could do nothing more assess people, paint water on their teeth and shine a light on, they would still be carrying out illegal practice of dentistry. You are getting confused between two different lots of legislation. You cannot provide assessment of or treatment on teeth OF ANY KIND eg you cannot polish teeth, you cannot take impressions without it breaking the law and being illegal practice of dentistry.

    ok look,

she is not harming or hurting anyone. I've had it done, with no side effects or any issues at all. And most of her customers have reported the same.

If people choose to have it done, thats up to them. And if I get a reply back saying about peroxide or dioxide, im gonna freak:eek: cos she dont use em.

And if you are so sure you know what you are talking about, what about the companies who supply the training and the equipment then? How comes they are still going strong? there are loads of different companies out there offering training and equipment to people and its expensive too!!!

Why are they still allowed to trade then? if this is suppposed to be soooooooo bad and wrong? please can you answer me that.

Of course the companies who supply equipment and "training" are expensive. Check how long they've been trading and you will see in most cases a long history of companies with similar names setting up closing down then reopening with similar sounding names or identical websites under different names.

Perhaps you are thinking of people like this http://www.iactw.org/#/science/4551981296 who attempt to blind people with discussions on various chemicals. In the end they are selling equipment and oxidising agents to enable people to carry out the illegal practice of dentistry. They themselves are not illegally practicing dentistry but as soon as their clients are prosecuted then I have no doubt they will be seeking legal redress against people who told them everything was above board.

It is not just whitening teeth that is illegal, even if you just polish someones teeth let alone put an oxidising substance on them you are breaking the law.

The above site talks about whitening being legal so long as you are certified yes.... a certified dentist or therapist/hygienist working to dentists prescription, otherwise there is legally no such thing as a legally certified course.

If ,as is obvious, you are confused as to whether it is illegal for your friend to carry out whitening and whether companies such as the above are wrong, contact the people who the government has charged, via the dentists act, with prosecuting people who practice dentistry illegally by offering tooth whitening services http://www.gdc-uk.org/Newsandpublications/Publications/Publications/GDC_Tooth_whitening_leaflet%20(2).pdf

    MOST of her customers?

MOST???? A few posts ago it was completely without problems? But we still don't know what this magic chemical - sorry - substance that isn't a chemical - is.

Surely yo cannot be so nieve to think that there are no bad people out there. No people who try to sell dodgy stuff to people who don't know any better.

Well that IS what's happening with the people who are selling whitening equuipment and products to people who aren't allowed to use it. It's a way to make a quick buck.

Trading Standards ARE restricting the supply to non-dentists and the GDC IS starting to prosecute beauticians for illegal practice of dentistry.

They are just lagging behind the salespeople.

Like rogue builders who diddle little old ladies, or rip off dodgy mechanics or junk mail lottery scams - it's not something that will have the police breaking down your friends door - but it is illegal, and the authorities who do deal with these things are starting to get a handle on it - and they ARE doing something.

Your best advice to your frend would be to put away all the magic juice and lights and to forget she ever did it.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

If you are in any doubt about your friends legality , does she know what's in the magic potion? Then this might seem familiar http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/x-ray/2010/05/teeth-whitening-booths.shtml

She might want to take note on sodium perboate.
