Thats for the above both of you. £300 does sound a lot more reasonable, I'll call the dentist and see why it's so expensive. I definately want to give it a go though, my teeth are awfully stained at the moment..but I quit smoking on Friday so this is my treat to myself!

Thanks for the info about microabrasion, no wonder I couldn't even find it mentioned on google if I was calling it microdermabrasion! Durr. The dentist said I had something that people get usually growing up in Asia (which I didn't...) or in parts of the country with high flouride in the water? I've got what I can only describe as mottled teeth really.

Does anyone know how Polanight compares with Enlighten Evolution? What is the difference between the 2 systems and which one is better? Thanks!

Polanight is an at home whitening system, the idea is to whiten your teeth for a couple hours a day/overnight for 2 weeks. Depending on which product you are offered from enlighten, its 2 weeks home whitening +/- in office whitening (without lasers/lights, and its not power bleaching). However, i would say the quality of enlighten products is superior in almost everyway,

In the past i have used all three systems. As other dentists have said, different systmes will work better with different patients. However in my experieince i have found Enlighten's evolution to give fantastic results. let me assure you that the in office stage uses very low concentrations of whitening gel, less than 25% of that used by zoom and other power whitening systems.

All cases i have done have reached B1 shade (the whitest shade on a standard vita shade guide) or whiter. It is an expensive system to use (i usually charge around £600), however it guarentees results, so u get peice of mind.

Having used polanight and optident whitening products before, i have been a little dissapointed with some outcomes, whereas that has never been the case with enlightens products.

Just wanted to ask another brief question. After being initially quoted £580 for teeth whitening, I went for an appt with the hygenist today and queried why the whitening was so expensive. They said it was because 'they'd need to use a lot more gel as the teeth are quite yellowed', would this be right? I'd assumed that the expensive part was the custom trays etc?

They did follow it up with saying that if I was considering going elsewhere then the dentist 'may' reduce the rate as he wouldn't want to loose me. Tricky. I don't mind paying a little over the odds, as I've finally found a dentist I'm happy with, but paying nearly double the going rate seems a bit silly.

    Any idea resident dentists?

  • whitening may be cheaper elsehwere, but it may be an alternative product which may not achieve the result you are looking for. Its difficult to say without actually seeing you, whether your teeth are that yellow that you may need additional weeks whitening.

In general the whitning gels and whitening trays are not overly expenisve, however what you are paying for is the dentist's time. Surgery time is very exensive and any good dentist will spend a fair time making sure you know how to use your product safely, and arrange reviews to make sure things are going smoothly.

Try and find out which particular product is on offer at £580, and then have a look around other practices and compare prices. For that price i would expect its something like enlightens evolution system. although some practices charge this much for zoom power whitening with home "top-ups".

Just a note - if it is power whitening, stay away from it. results are generally unstable and fade back quickly, and there are quite a few issues with sensativity.

Go and speak to your dentist - don't muck about with the internet sites.

    Hello,

I whitened mine a couple of years ago (custom trays / gel). IIRC, it was around £300 at my dentist and I am thrilled with the results.

I'm considering a "top up". What is a fair price (for more Gel) would you say?

    TIA,
    Stephen
  • Hi
I paid £199 to my local dentist. A special offer price, they normally charge £350. He gave me 4 syringes of 10% carbamide peroxide. I was just looking for a few shades lighter and not 'brilliant white' but am not happy with the result so far. I will be asking him this but....any dentists out there...do you normally supply more gel (without extra charge) if the original amount hasn't quite done the job? If not, how much could I expect to pay?

I do supply as much gel as is needed - but I charge £420, and don't do 'deals'!
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Thanks for the reply. The special offer price was for the same service as the full price and it is a very reputable and established local dentist. I can understand that consumers should be wary of 'deals' when it comes to cosmetic procedures. But I thoroughly researched it before I went ahead (just forgot to ask about extra gel if required)

Best to ask the dentist concerned then really.

It probably will do - 4 seems quite a small number. I start off with 12 - but that's for top & bottom. Normally that's enough, but 4-8 more syringes isn't unusual.

there was another thread on this but i cant find it now, i used a little bicarbonate soda on my toothpaste last couple of days to brush my teeth and it has started to make a little difference and I believe tooth whiteing toothpste rally just this added. I dont really have bad teeth just wanted a little boost. Is this okay to use, I presume it is??

Sorry to ask silly questions..... could one of you fab dentists let me know. I'm only really looking for a little brightening I dont need full results and dont have 'bad ' cloured teeth and look after them and dont smoke and on occassion have slightly sensitive teeth so wouldnt do 'full' whitening anyway
