i'm thinking of having my teeth whitened but not sure how much i should expect to pay and if there are any techniques that are better than others?

anyone else have their teeth whitened or use diy products.

    pros and cons?

  • Hi Ninky,

I have used Crest Advanced Pro Whitening Strips and they are super excellent! We bought the ones with extra adhesive and would advise those as even they didnt stick solid. They are an American Product and I bought mine from Ebay. Any questions just ask xxx

I know professionally done it costs at least a few hundred pounds, definitely have a read of reviews etc x

    Hi

I had my done last week for graduation, i paid 99 pounds for the treatmenrt and it took approximately an hour!

I am very pleased with the results ( I got it done for my graduation photos!)

There are lots of down sides tho:

I would say make sure and get it done at least a week before any event.

My teeth were supersensitive and had a few shooting pains during the treatment and for 24-48 hours after.

Some of the whitening agent even got on my lip and this all blistered - lasting about 2/3days.

You also have white gums for a few hours after the treatment.

Also if you are prone to coldsores - this will inevitably going to give you coldsores!

Also remember for 72 hours you are only allowed to eat white or light coloured foods.

There are many downsides but for me it was worthwhile, as i say i am pleased with the results, i also will be going back for yearly top ups!

PS the bit of plastic they put in your mouth to hold ur lips back , make sure it is comfortble initally as mine sat behind my bottom teeth and really hurt! I thought it was only in for a short period!

Hope this helps, any more questions just ask!

i'm not sure i'm keen to have blistering? are there different techniques that don't cause this?

also i've heard the diy treatments cause longterm damage to teeth enamel. is this true do you think or scaremongering?

I had mine bleached by Boots dentist - this takes a while as they take a mould which has to be sent away to be made but apart from some sensitivity my teeth were really white after a week of using the bleach gel. Cost me about £100.

Read up on Crest Whitestrips, and what they say, these are meant to be safe and protect the enamel. Cant remember exactly what it said though xxx

My dentist offers a 'light' based treatment which essentially means smiling into a special lamp for an hour or so. The cost is £500ish as far as I understand but without any of the pitfalls of the cheaper options.

Try just visiting a hygienist first for a clean and polish, if not a regular thing already. This removes so much staining that it's can be as good as whitening if you haven't been doing it before.

Otherwise, you are best off visiting a dentist for a treatment. OTC treatments are very very weak unless bought from countries where there is little regulation.

I use Listerine Strips; luckily my DS lives in the USA so I stock up on them.
Do have a contact who could send you some?
