I just bought a Dyson

...and what a load of rubbish! I have an ancient AEG (before Electrolux bought them) and it works perfectly fine, I've had it for over 12 years and the only problem is sourcing the bags as the model is no longer available. It also looks a bit battered but works fine.
So I thought I'd get a bagless vacuum and Dyson seemed to be the leader there, so I got a reconditioned D23 allergy cylinder....and I'm so disappointed! Yeah it might not lose suction, but there's not a lot of suction to start with, my old AEG will lift the rug off when I put the new bag in, the Dyson one won't lift the towelling mat in the bathroom
.
Plus the whole thing seems flimsy and bulky, it's messy when I try to empty the cylinder and the telescopic tube keeps slipping and reducing.
Is this what I'm supposed to expect from Dyson in general or have I just been unlucky? Is there way to reduce/improve suction on it as I can't find any buttons? I mean I hoovered and it looks clean but the flat wasn't dirty to start with. I'm confused so can anyone help please???

There is a rocker switch right at the head end of the hover make sure it is rocked right forward (I think) you should have loads of suction, I LOVE my Dyson.0

Can't really help, can only agree about Dyson being rubbish. I had a Dyson upright untill about 18months ago, when fed up with it, I decided to freecycle it & treat myself to a Vax. Brilliant, far better suction & cleaning & so much lighter.
The only thing I can suggest with yours is that you check the filters are spotless, as this can really affect the suction, also make sure there isn't a split anywhere in the hose.
If you're really stuck then give Dyson a call as their one saving grace seems to be pretty good customer service. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
Not sure about yours OP, but our dyson(upright) is 11 years old and still has loads of suction.
As another said their customer service is good, you could give tham a call0 -
Hmm interesting..I have actually been thinking today to get a new dyson (open to any other suggestions tho). I have had no problems with my dyson until recently with attachments snapping off and hose getting ripped. Have had the hose replaced twice. Been cleaning filters but think the suction is going. Had it 8 years and was thinking of replacing it.
What is average life expectancy of a dyson (DC04)?
I look forward to any other replies to this thread

I love my Dyson, as regards suction its so strong it almost lifts my bathroom soft flooring up I have to be careful... I have to press a button in or out on the head for less suction when hoovering wooden floors... You have to make sure the telescopic tube is securely catched if you don't pull it far enough it doesn't lock .. I don't know how its messy to empty you just unlock the container and tip it away its easy as pie..:T#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

Yeah telescopic tube clicks when I extend it but regardless of that it slides back while I'm hoovering.
Hmm, unlock the container, have to twist it round and then remove the "cyclones" - the mess happens when twisting.0 -
We had a dyson and it was rubbish. It used to suck ok but cut out after 5 minute of use. I took it back to costco and got the money back then bought a henry, much better.Nothing to see here, move along.0

I'm seriously considering returning it as I got it directly from Dyson (from ebay) and getting maybe a Miele cat and dog as it seems to get good reviews. Does Miele use disposable paper bags?0

I think the first generation of Dysons were good, and were of a good build quality.
The lastest ones appear to be over engineered rubbish from my experiance.
Mieles seem to be doing quite well in the most recent which magazine reports. - and they are often cheaper.0
