As the opinions of a lot of the posters on here are not what I hear around me from day to day and from Falmouth to Formby, lets look at some polls which are probably more representative of the opinions of the population as a whole. These are more in line with comments I have regularly heard over the last few decades.

1. 81% of people agree that the Government should substantially reduce immigration levels to Britain.
2. 60% of Asians believe that there are too many immigrants in Britain.
3. 77% agree that you cannot criticise the amount of immigration, or individual immigrants, without being labelled a racist.
4. 85% agree that immigration is putting too much pressure on public services.
5. 45% of the Black respondents felt that there was too much immigration into Britain.
6. 76% of people agree that Britain is overcrowded.
7. 62% of people think that Britain will soon lose its unique identity if immigration continues as it is.
8. 76% think that there is, a fair amount (52%) or a great deal (24%), of tension between races and nationalities.

1. YouGov, November 2007
2. BBC Asian Network poll April 2005
3. Populus for the BBC March 2008
4. YouGov, November 2007
5. MORI, January 2007, cited in “Our Shared Future”, Commission on Integration and Cohesion, 14 June 2007, para. 2.42
6. YouGov, January 2007
7. ORB, November 2007

You idiot. It is not racist to raise, debate and consider immigration, especially when it costs our country so much money. After reading this thread I wouldn't be surprised if we don't end up with civil war between communities given the strength of peoples arguements and anger vented as soon as somebody mentioned immigration.

Racist bigot on the loose.

This attitude is the reason why the government won't address immigration, for fear of being branded racists.

Let me just say, that is pathetic, there is nothing racist about saying we should not be giving millions in handouts to immigrants when there are brittish people in poverty.

Nor is it racist to say we should deport those immigrants who we do allow into the country who then abuse our charity by preaching hate. For example Abu hamza, a non british national that came here as an imigrant was reportedly at one point receiving £1,200 a week in benefits, including rent paid on a five bed home, while at the same time preaching that killing non muslims, thats us, the british people, was something to be proud of, and that women who answer back should expect to be "slapped in the face"

Abu hamza is an extreme (but not isolated) example of how our immigration system has been abused, and for me personally what makes this even more disgraceful is that several years ago my father was made redundant and could get no help with his mortgage despites 40 years of paying tax, at the same time the government were paying this guy £1,200 per week in benefits.

How we can justify giving homes to immigrants when there are still britsh people who are registered as homeless on waiting lists is beyond me.

Who was it that said charity begins at home?

i know what you are saying but the way you link these points is flawed.

surely the issue is whether or not someone should actually receive £1200 a week in benefits regardless of their ideology or political stance.

additionally not all british people are non muslims. many british people are muslim (including some white british converts).

also, preaching killing of anyone is in fact illegal. so the issue here is actually enforcing the law against people who call for people to be killed for whatever reason. in this group we should also include people who call for specific peodophiles or rapists to be killed since this is also strictly illegal. in fact yusuf islam (cat stevens) once suggested salman rushdie should be burned to death on national uk television and no charges were pressed against him.

some british people also think that women who answer back should be "slapped in the face".

abu hamza is a unique case not representative of immigrants as a whole. david copeland the london nail bomber, a one time member of the bnp and follower of nazi ideology who spread terror and killed civilians including a white pregnant briton with his campaign of hate, was similarly a unique case. simply because david copeland was white male and inspired by the ideologies of the bnp, would you suggest that every member of the bnp was the same?

I think you miss his point, which is not saying every Muslim immigrant preaches hate, of course they don't. - Its the point that his Dad had no help despite being a tax payer for 40 years while someone who hates the UK and never should have been allowed here gets £1200 a week.

It is simple - unless they are going to adopt our ways then they should nt come.

this illogical too. had abu hamza been made redundant and been living in a mortgaged property he would have had no help with his mortgage either. should cyril82's dad have been in rented accommodation with a family of the same size and unemployed he would have also received £1200 a week in benefits. the issue is with the benefits system. not whether someone likes or hates the uk or was born here. some britons also hate the uk and other people living in it. they have equal rights to the benefit system as patriotic brits. so what, exactly, is the point?
