I had Avast in my desktop (now not connected to the web) and it worked fine. I installed AVG in my laptop and it is a pain.... they have been trying to sell me the paid version for more than two months, saying they have stopped updates on the free as from April 12. Not good. Definitely will ditch it. I was going to install Avast but seeing the comments about Avira and that in Review center both seem to rate high I tried to install it, but alas, they want to sell me something before (for their premium version):

Did not like that much... as for Kaspersky, never heard before, but reviews are not good:

Still not connected to the web!

I did not. I downloaded AVG 7.5 more than two years ago. It was a free version at the time. It would update itself all the time without warning and slow down your system. A couple of months ago they started warning they would not update that version anymore and that you should download the new one: 8.5.
As it happens, I can read five languages. Perhaps you are not aware there are a lot of cultivated people out there who do not necessarily master IT technicalities.

So why would you expect AVG 7.5 that you "downloaded more than two years ago" to be suitable to use today?

You obviously totally ignored the prompts that you received to update AVG 7.5 to AVG 8.

You may be able to read five languages but it did not help you as you have obviously downloaded the wrong products if you want free protection!

Free products do try to get you to opt for their paid for version but the choice is yours for you to make, so long as you understand the options available.

You admit that you have no understanding of IT but do not take advice from those that do, which I find quite amusing. Keep on struggling then.

AVG 8.5 was not a free version. Of course I try to follow advice whenever possible.

Only due to you not seeing the free version!

AVG 8.5 FREE VERSION AVAILABLE HERE

If you had followed the advice that you were given in your connection problem thread, you would likely have been connected long ago!

As someone who gets a call from the in-laws every time this AVG prompt comes up asking similar questions to yours, let me summarise what's going on: marketing!

The prompt and pages they put in front of you are designed to confuse and get you to buy the full-price product. 95% of the page space discusses the benefits of the paid version. The 'Next' or 'Download' buttons that are the most obvious are for the paid version. But the free version links ARE there - you just have to read the whole page and look for the correct link, not follow what is the most natural and quickest path through the update.

    Hi there

Do I need to do anything else now? Also do we keep these programmes installed now...and if yes, how often should we use them?
When we had AVG we had it set to do a scan every morning automatically. I'm not sure if we have the option to do this now so would I just scan every day when we get up or could we leave it longer now?

Sorry for all the questions...your help has really been appreciated.

It is going a lot faster today.

There s really no need to scan daily ~ it just slows your computer down and wears the hard drive out

Id suggest alternating weekly scans with Avira, Malwarebytes and SAS

I can look deeper if you like?

    That's great...thanks for advice.

I'll do as you suggest and alternate them.
