Avast has been one of the best AV applications I have used, as good as Sophos (Commercial AV).
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

I had Avast in my desktop (now not connected to the web) and it worked fine. I installed AVG in my laptop and it is a pain.... they have been trying to sell me the paid version for more than two months, saying they have stopped updates on the free as from April 12. Not good. Definitely will ditch it. I was going to install Avast but seeing the comments about Avira and that in Review center both seem to rate high I tried to install it, but alas, they want to sell me something before (for their premium version):

Did not like that much... as for Kaspersky, never heard before, but reviews are not good:

You have downloaded the wrong version! It's becoming much clearer why you have not managed to connect your PC over wireless now, you can't read.

I think you need to learn to use the net properly before jumping to conclusions Nik

We had AVG 7.5 and our trial period ran out last week. It was always fine.

Took the 30 day trial of new 8.5 (I think) with the added Internet Security..it has been a nightmare. PC is so slow. I set the scan time to 6am and it is still running as we speak.

I've been reading the comments about Avira and think We should go with this.

Do you think I will still be able to use the tool removal suggested, even though we are on the 30 day trial? I'm afraid we are not very pc savvy and will get my son to follow any tips you give. My printer not working so can't print off screen prints.

I see we download Free Avira, then disconnect Internet. Do we then download AVG removing Tool and use? Then install Avira?

Hope you will be patient with us, cos I'm getting the blame for the AVG stuff.

    Thanks

    Lola

Assuming you mean the computer I would suggest as follows for starters ~

Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD NOW')
    http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html
    UPDATE and FULL SCAN
Post the log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds

    reboot

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click DO A SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE (Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)

I did not. I downloaded AVG 7.5 more than two years ago. It was a free version at the time. It would update itself all the time without warning and slow down your system. A couple of months ago they started warning they would not update that version anymore and that you should download the new one: 8.5.
As it happens, I can read five languages. Perhaps you are not aware there are a lot of cultivated people out there who do not necessarily master IT technicalities.
