save the file to the desktop and scan it with avira.

That's quite a limiting factor of the product if you have to save the email and then scan it from the desktop..

Whilst AVG is slow, takes 4 hours to scan my pc, it automatically scans any incoming mails.

I shall be staying with AVG then.

Set your default scan to a fast scan that should speed it up a little bit.
If it doesnt pay rent sell it.

Thanks, I tried that but it made lttle difference. I have assumed that you were refering to AVG.

  • Seeing as Avira does not scan emails does Avast? I looked on their website but it was not apparent.

You don't have to save it to your desktop; Avira will scan it when you open it and then warn you if it finds an infection in it, just as it does with everything else.

Doesn't your provider scan for viruses in your email anyway?

Not sure but I will check.
  • So Avira does scan your emails before opening them ?

Can someone confirm and I will replace AVG with Avira

    Thanks

It scans every file when you open it.

An email scanner scans your mail as its being downloaded.

Just because it doesn't have email scanning, it doesn't mean that you aren't protected against viruses in emails.

Here's a discussion of the pros and cons:

And just so we're clear, if you only use webmail (i.e. you check your email in your browser) email scanning is 100% useless.

Please realise that if AVG doesnt KNOW theres a virus in the email because of its poor detection rates then your going to get infected anyways

  • I recommend Kaspersky Anti Virus 2009
