According to this (which is usually reliable) cars for scrapping DO NOT need TAX OR MOT, a SORN declaration WILL DO INSTEAD. Now thats more like it. :D

Nice idea, but the direct gov website states you need an MOT, and either road tax, or a SORN.

Well you can always trust a newspaper

You can ignore the first bit of this article but if you go down a bit it will give you something to think about next time you are sat behind a diesel belching out thick black soot.

Don't use the scrappage scheme then. Sell the existing car privately.

I would if it was worth anything. Who would pay more than £300 for a 130,000 mile 1999 T 1.6 focus with a few dents and scratches? Ive owned the car for close to 7 years and expected it to be run to its death. I was merely highlighting the stupidity of the scrappage scheme designed to get polluting cars off the road when I will (most likely) be using the scheme to get a more polluting car on the road.

    me, i would, gladly.

the scrappage scheme wasnt dressed up in green clothes, its all about kick starting the economy again, there wasnt any mention of greeness in the budget, it was about making money.

if the cars be looked after then mileage is irrelavant tbh, a couple of dents and scratches is nothing for a 10 year old motor, it is all about the economy but vauxhall were doing this already "ecoflex" you scrap any car so long as youve owned it for 12 months with a valid mot you'd get £1000 off a new low emisson car

I would think carefully about 'giving' your car away, either as part of the scrappage scheme or for £300.

    (a) you've already found yourself that you can get a better deal via an online broker, therefore effectively your getting NOTHING for your car.

    (b) thereare currently 67 1999 1.6 Ford Focus's (Foci?) on autotraders website ranging from £695 to £2495. Even taking the mid point, your car could make £1500. I'd say a good valet and some simple 'refurbishments' could get you to that point.

TBH, for years i did exactly that - bought cheap 'worthless' trade ins for a few hundred, spent a day's TLC on them and maybe a set of genuine wheel trims and hey presto £500 increase in value.

I've got two cars over 10 years old. One is ready to be scrapped, the other worth about £1500.
I want to 'end up with' a 2-to-5 year old family car. (Focus/Golf..w.h.y)

I'm wondering if I can trade both old cars, buy 2 new, & sell them, hopefully making some money, certainly avoiding a loss!

The crux would be I would have to sell the new cars for less than someone could go into a dealer & buy one for, CASH.

If my idea is viable the new cars would have to be guaranteed re-sellers, probably a small car that the garages are managing to sell at the moment.
I can afford the money outlay at the moment for the new cars, but not longer term, which is why I'd buy an older car at the end of it all.

Never having had £cash£ to go into a dealer to buy a new car I have absolutely no idea what sort of deals a good haggler can do....(I'm useless at it )

Any advice will be greatfully received.
  • If i were you i wouldn't bother. It'll be a load of stress and i very much doubt you will break even never mind make a profit.

As mentioned numerous times the scrappage incentive is in essence only worth £1000. This means you would only benefit £1000 max against a customer buying cash without a px. I doubt this is enough to cover how much less you'd have to sell two "second hand" cars for when compared to new.
