In my house in the hallway, hollowed into the stairs is a little cupboard where all shoes live-it's one of the quirks of the house that I fell in love with when we viewed it. What could be simpler, walk thru front door into hallway, take off shoes put them in built-in cupboard.....and do the family do it...do they hell:mad: I am forever getting on at them to put them away.

It's so funny reading the differing opinions on here! In my house Dh and I don't wear shoes in the house. Well I wear slippers and he has a pair of indoor shoes (trainers that he only wears in the house as he refuses to wear grandaddy slippers! I tell him to enjoy the comfort but you can't tell him!) Most guests take shoes off as we keep our shoes in the hallway, but I wouldn't ask anyone to take their shoes off.
As for me taking them off in other peoples houses it depends. Mostly I wear socks so I will take my shoes off, more for comfort than anything else. If however I happen to be wearing no socks I would not take my shoes off unless they lent me a pair of socks/ slippers (which one of my friends always does) If I didn't know them well enough to request socks/ slippers I would make my excuses and leave. I have a real phobia of bare feet and feel naked and very uncomfortable showing them in public. This said I do take my slippers to a few peoples houses (I thought I was the only weirdo who did that!) where I know i have to take off shoes, and most of the time I keep spare socks in my bag (big mama's, mary poppins nappybag/ handbag affair!)

I have a 10 month old and don't worry if people walk on my floor in their shoes- good heavens, I even let her crawl on the floor in public places and even outside! OMG!!! Surely thats why we clean babies, because they get dirty! Today for example she was putting handfuls of grass in her mouth- a dog very well might have wee'ed on said grass. Until the world becomes self cleaning, like soap, I'll have to cope with her getting grubby and then cleaning her up. :D
  • We never used to care about shoes... until mum decided on a new pale carpet downstairs :D Now they come off at the door! Friends and family just follow suit and we have spare slippers.

The bare-footed people are braver than me though - dad once stood on an accidentally dropped needle and that was enough to get our family firmly in slippers for life

thanks for everyone's replies, I didn't think when I posted this little poll/query in the morning that I'd come back to 4 pages of different opinions.

And not a hint of bickering between posters.:D

This seems to be an area where people can genuinely agree to disagree without falling out about it on this forum! :beer:Cheers everyone.

I have to add that in our household we are both sufferers of plantar faciitis, so wear slippers or indoor sandals round the house to provide support for our arches, whereas previously we went barefoot.

We use our back door to come into the house, into a kitchen with near-white tiles on the floor. The only footprints allowed on that floor are the cats.;)

    Very painful. :(

Have you had the injection for it? It cleared my Mum's straight away after months of suffering.

I work from home and occasionally get customers visiting. There's a sign on the outside of the door saying 'New carpets please remove shoes', so some of them just hover on the very large doormat rather than remove their muddy boots

All my family remove their shoes as soon as they come in the door. It's not like I make them , they just do it. They leave them in the front porch.

I'd never dream of asking visitors to take off their shoes. What if visitors who'd been asked to remove their shoes before coming in, had really stinky, cheesy feet? Would you make them put their shoes back on because then your carpet would smell?

We all know what the shoes probably have stepped on, why would you want that inside your house?

If we didnt have carpet in a number of the rooms I might have let some people in without taking their shoes off, but carpets are so difficult to clean I rather take the shoes off. :)
  • I always take my shoes off at other people's houses. I don't expect people to take them off at mine unless they have visibly dirty shoes. Sometimes I leave mine on when i'm at home, most of the time I do take them off though.
We are renting at the moment and the carpet wasn't clean when we moved in, as mentioned in our inventory too. If it was a brand new carpet and had obviously been cleaned before we moved in I would be a lot more careful and probably insist people take their shoes off.

I put my slippers on as soon as I get in, but that's just cos I like being comfy. I never ask anyone to take their shoes off when they come round.
