I have a three storey house with laminate on the ground floor but the living room and kitchen are up a level so dirt gets trapsed every where so insist people take their shoes off. The only time people seem to get imbarressed is if they havent washed their feet or not changed their socks in a while ewww. lol :-)x

and I expect that most people WILL want me to.

I know it's hardly scientific, but over 80% of people on this pole have voted for would never ask visitors to remove their shoes. So that suggests that less than 1 in 5 people would ask others to remove their shoes.

I have only once in my life been asked to remove my shoes in someone's house. And that was a house I was viewing with regard to buying. Having sold a house I can understand why a vendor would ask viewers to do that. But I found it so unwelcoming I never went back for a 2nd viewing even though the house was well within my budget and met my needs.

Though I guess I've never known anyone as an adult who has chosen carpet as a downstairs floor covering. Everyone I know has wooden or tiled floors, or a carpet they want to replace. No matter how hard you work to keep them clean, carpets are unhygienic and a huge amount of work. They are cosy, but so, so much work.

I've already asked the question about visitors with really pongy feet, but what would the sticklers for visitors removing shoes do, if a doctor, the police or paramedics had to come in? I'm just curious.
Im so shocked by the attitudes of some of the people who dont take their shoes off. Its just common sense, I would never expect a disabled person to remove their shoes if they couldnt, why would I? Also with Drs and nurses etc, Im not that house proud. Same with if my house was on fire, I wouldnt make the firemen remove them, thats just laughable. My grandparents come round and keep their shoes on, because they havent got their shoe horms and any other equipment they use to get their shoes back on. Never would I make them take them off, thats just plain nasty. All Im saying is its my house and if my friends, or relatives want to come round, why shouldn't they remove their shoes if I ask them. I think its just polite to remove your shoes when you enter someones house!

Never have, though I walk around in bare feet - even in the garden.

My husband does this and it drives me potty - what's the point of blithering on about how rude it is to wear shoes in the house then wandering around the garden in bare feet before wandering around the house?

That's going to change when I have my new carpets

Nope ;) Completely the opposite, I get told off by our builder for not wearing shoes in the house ;)
  • anybody who doesn't insist on people removing shoes at the door obviously have never had dog mess trampled through the house. It is not just a bit of muck that bothers me. I always feel awkward asking people to remove their shoes at my house, but it is MY house and i will continue asking people to. With 4 kids it is difficult to enforce sometimes. I always remove my shoes at other peoples houses even if they say it doesn't matter
    now mum of 4!!!
