Cream carpet... rented house - I never used to be a shoes off person but the shoe rack is in the porch, my slippers live in there and NO ONE is coming in with shoes on (my nerves won't take this flipping carpet)!

Bother... no option for me to vote. No shoes on upstairs in my house but downstairs is fine.

I do occasionally think about dog poo coming in but then I also wonder upstairs about sweaty feet on the carpet... then decide that it's a trivial matter on the whole.

I cannot walk without my lace up shoes which hold my walking aid in place. So what am I supposed to do?

i have cream carpets throughout - really muddy shoes i would expect to be removed (an in my experience most people in that possition would do so!) but general shoes i would not expect to be removed!! the fluff from socks i find more annoying than footprints to clear up!!!!

Really interesting thread. Haven't been on it for a couple of days so a lot to read. We are a non-shoe household and as far as I am aware no-one has had a problem with me asking to take their shoes off inside front door. I am a childminder and have had lots of babies crawling on my floor and would certainly not wanting them picking up anything nasty! I have been in my current house for 23 years and are only on our second lots of carpets and they usually wear out before looking dirty. I also think its healthier for your feet and littles one to be free from shoes. Its so quick to take your shoes off and saves a lot of cleaning time.
  • I don't remember, as a child , anyone ever taking off their shoes indoors I would feel rude asking anyone to take thier shoes off in my house. Likewise I would consider it rude if anyone asked me to take my shoes off. But people are different now I think.
The only thing that annoys me is my oh and ds who go up the garden to thier sheds in the winter and walk straight back in the house with mud on their
shoes , and don't bother wiping their feet. I have 2 doormats between the door and the carpet so surely it is not too much trouble.

I worked and lived in Japan for 13 years, where you take your shoes off to go into any house, dentists, doctors, some restaurants etc. So as a family we continued it when we came back to the UK. All shoes come off as you enter the front door. We don't insist on it for visitors, but most friends follow suit.

I'd agree with this, for in your own home, we are barefoot a lot too. Well, most of the time. If I have something icky, like a verucca, I don't necessarily want to risk infecting those babies, nor do I really relish telling people! I also think, with other peoples children, keeping the rooms they are mainly in you are probably right. I don't have children, but if I did I'd be letting them risk a bit of dirt...in my own home, as they say our over cosseting is one of the things leading to allergies etc. But with a childminder, I'd agree, that is a different situation.

But presumably people aren't visiting when you have children there?

yes shoes all off at the door. After watching a program where they tested fibres off a carpet and found it full of faeces then i insist on it !
Tough if people dont like it but i dont want my kid crawling and playing around in a room full of poo. yak

Blimey if that doesn't convince the shoe wearers I don't know what will.

I have carpet on the stairs, so if you go up stairs shoes come off, I have hard flooring downstairs but a giant white rug in the living room, with the sofas butted up to it on either side & the coffee table between, so you can't sit down without stepping on the rug, so shoes need to come off before anyone sits down too.
