But that's what I mean MrCow - I don't consider it rude or inconsiderate not to remove your shoes and don't ask people to do so in my house, so unless I was specifically asked to it wouldn't occur to me to do it elsewhere (unless they were abnormally dirty of course), but I would be upset if someone thought I was rude for not doing it and was silently seething to themselves the whole time I was there.
As this thread has shown that people have dramtically differing opinions on the matter, maybe those who prefer guests not to wear shoes should just ask rather than assuming that people are demonstrating a lack of respect to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings.

I think it's rude to ask visitors to take their shoes off! WHat else are they supposed to wear?

OH and I don;t wear shows in the house, but I'd never ask visitors to remove them and if people ask me to in thier houses I'm pretty offended (and usually ask if I can keep them on).

I'll only take them off if people insist and I tend not to visit again if they do, as I think it is so rude.

  • i voted just family as ive got laminate downstairs and a cream carpet upstairs (who in their right mind puts cream carpet in a rented house??) and only family goes upstairs and they take their shoes off without asking.

wouldnt dream of telling someone that they had to take their shoes off though as i would find that really rude.

I wonder how much difference there is between city and country dwellers in this thread!

Personally, living in a city, I wouldn't dream of asking people to remove their shoes when they come in as guests (and who knows what kind of fungal diseases might be hidden in there, LOL!) - but I expect them to stay in communal areas of the house. I wouldn't like outside shoes in bedrooms or upstairs bathroom, but it's not likely to happen anyway.

Wait until you have a baby crawling over the floor and putting everything in their mouth, maybe you'll change your mind about how revolting it is then? ;)

Doubt it. I'm not too bothered about a bit of dirt.

Forgot to mention that I also have cats which are free to go in and out through the cat flap (they are not allowed in the bedrooms) so it would be a bit pointless to ask human guests to remove their shoes!

It's not a "bit of dirt" - it's all the spit and !!!!!! that gets walked in off the streets. If you're not bothered about your kid putting that in their mouth then fair enough.....we're all different I guess?

You can;t be sure they won;t anyway. And as we have a cat i can;t exactly get her to bathe her paws after she's been to the litter tray!

My mum didn't get people to take shoes off when I and my brother were babies, and we're still alive, so I think it will be OK.

And as I said, OH and I wipe our feet and take our shoes off, and visitors always wipe on the mat, so I think the issue isn;t really such a big deal. It obviously is to you, and that's your call in your house, but it isn;t to me.
