Edit: And another thing why should people claiming benefits be able to have £6,000 in savings before it affects their money. I am 35 and have never had £6k in savings infact even now I have £192 and that will be spent on my car insurance when it is due. You should only be able to get help if you can prove you have NOTHING not a sausage or a bean.

No sorry I disagree. Why should those with savings be penalised if they are made redundant? Just because they have not gone out and blown the lot and managed their money properly. They may be saving for private medical bills as the NHS can't be relied upon. Not everyone is insurable. In the US they recommend people have a years salary in the bank for emergencies. There would be nothing wrong with that practice here.

Why is it that people look at work in purely financial terms?
Because usually it is the only reason people go to work. I certainly would not be doing my job for the fun of it! In fact if I get the chop in this recession 12K for sitting on my aarse watching Jeremy Kyle seems great. Everybody else seems to be getting away with it, its quite tempting. Why work for a living when Gordon gives my tax away for people on the dole and bails out banks with our money? Plus 100 other wastes of tax, !!!!!! films anyone?

Actually, pretty much all studies show that the vast majority of people do not work only for the money, and that salary is pretty far down the list of important, motivating factors for most employees.

Sure, I'd never underestimate the importance of salary as a factor: it's the first thing that jumps out at people and can often be a factor that attracts or keeps employees. But it is one factor of many, and certainly not the most important. Job satisfaction, feelings of pride and value in people's work, a sense of achievement and the advancement through a variety of roles that challenge people will always trump salaries for most people (and nearly all studes show this). Increasingly more important to a the new generation of workers (born post '82 / '83) is ethical work aspects, flexible working, non-financial benefits such as encouraged sabaticals and travel. A recent really interesting study surveyed young workers (i.e. under 30) and nearly half working for uninspiring companies stated that they would swap a payrise to get involved with new initiatives such as company sponsored community and volunteer projects.

Of course, you may have a job you hate that you do soley for cash. But, whilst this may seem the norm to you, it's not the norm for the vast majority of people.

You honestly you have a job that you hate so much that the idea of being unemployed, watching the pile of sh*te that is Jeremey Kyle seems more appealing? Sounds like you need a more challenging, enjoyable job.

I'm one of those who would prefer to be working, even if for a pittance as it gave me self respect, the respect of others, a social life etc.

And I am still waiting for someone to tell me what blooming Jeremy Kyle is about! I've asked umpteem times now...is it something exciting that I should be doing?
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

If I got the same for working as not I'd rather not. When you're at work all you have is your nose rubbed in it as you're surrounded by people doing things that you can't afford, buying things you can't afford. I've been working the last few weeks and surrounded by people with all manner of things going on. They've all got partners, all having holidays, all buying stuff ...

Can you imagine how isolating it is to sit at work with nothing to say because you've not been anywhere, not going anywhere, can't join in ... ?

For the same money, I'd rather sit at home. Especially for those people whose role/position are unlikely to improve. Not everybody's in a job/company wehre there is promotion/progression.

It's an opportunity for middle class Britian to turn their nose up at people who, quite frankly, are bordering on having mental health problems and are paid chump change to get up on stage to be booed and hissed at because they're not intelligent enough, or have never been taught how, to live their lives properly.

I can never quite work out whether it is the 'contestants' or the host that I feel most disgusted about. Probably both, as you couldn't have one without the other.

No offense PN, but do you not see work as one of the factors to get you out of that situation? You work, you meet people, you earn more cash, you meet even more people, you socialise with people through work, you meet people via people at work, you end up going on holiday with people from work...

I dunno. I might be biased as I met Mrs C and a number of good friends through a variety of jobs from when I was a waiter ten years ago to now.

Right, quite enjoying this debate, but I'm off to play squash. With someone from work, strangely enough.
