I thought the cost of living was going down? Aren't we in a period of deflation? Surely that means that benefits should be going down, not up?

I love the way the majority of you are talking about people claiming jsa as being lazy and cannot be bothered to work. Maybe it would do some of you good to look on the redundancies board on these forums. The people losing their jobs are just like you and I. Hasn't it occurred to any of you that we are in a very severe recession and if you still have a job then you are a very lucky person. Perhaps if one or two of you were made redundant you would get a taste of what job seeking today is actually like. If you were forced to claim jsa without any choice about it maybe you would change your tune a little bit.

while i agree jobs are harder to get there are people still managing to find employment, a friend who lost his job in Feb has not relied on the job centre but got off his backside dropped his cv everywhere and yesterday started a full time job at Homebase.

Fully agree you've described many people but equally there are some people who proudly proclaim they have no desire to work and are happy getting their weekly handout. Mr Ding Dong is such an individual. He is as happy as a pig in **** getting by on his handouts and supplementing them with whatever means he sees fit. He has no drive to further himself and will happily call anyone a fool for working for what they can get free from the state ignoring the obvious that the only way he'll ever get anywhere of note is to work himself "up the ladder".
Best of luck to him if that's what he truly wants. I've got a feeling the majority of these people soon get bored of their fairly frugal existence and soon start to moan about the people who "have more". Their short sightedness is their real problem, not the system.

Have you been to the shops to buy food lately? Noticed the utility companies slashing prices? Essentials are highly inflationary at the moment particularly with the weak pound and the vast majority of this Nation's food being imported via just in time supply chains.

No worries. It was the first thing that I thought of. Benefits should stay the same at the least or, drop. They certainly shouldn't be going up.

Ah, but we are in a period of DEFLATION. Apparently. The statistics say so.

    Or something.

Couldn't give a toss myself though, if I'm completely honest.

Yes, GDP has fallen meaning the economy is decreasing in size, however the cost of essentials have been rising fast.

Well, in that case my understanding of 'deflation' is incorrect.

    Apologies.

Well, not everyone on JSA will get housing benefit or council tax - I certainly don't. Currently JSA works out at about £1.50 an hour, or £3.3K a year (except that I won't be able to get it for that long), so definitely worth going back to work.

It's not possible to live on JSA alone - even with a very restricted budget. Any increase will be very welcome.

    I agree

I was made redundant a week ago. I signed on for JSA last week. I am not entitled to anything apart from that. It was nice when I went for my "interview" at the job centre and they were really positive about my efforts to find a job. I have been off work just over a week and i am fed up of it already :( I for one cannot wait to get back to work, but i do feel that after all the tax etc and never claimed for anything in my life. i should be entitled to some help.

I find it a little insulting for people to assume we are all in the same boat dole dosser etc as i would rather be in a job than sat on the net all day job hunting and watching jeremy kyle!!
