my OH has worked full time since she left school up until january this year when she was made redundant. (20 years).

the job situation in this area looks bleaker by the week, even the girl at the JC today said it was dire and there was nothing out there. if the JSA was to be upped for the next 3 months that she can still claim (cont) then i wont complain, after all its the only benefit we claim.

we have a mortgage and we pay full CT.

what annoys me most is that she has had hardly any replies to the jobs she has applied for, not even a thanks but no thanks. we did find that two of the jobs she applied for had 500 and 200 applicants though and i expect the other roles have been similar.

we spend most of our increased time together playing Numberwang!

I believe Dr Ding Dong is actually a fully-employed doctor, or someone fully employed anyway, who gets his/her kicks by winding up people on this forum.

I also believe that being forced to watch Jeremy Kyle (I've seen a couple of snippets) would have me out searching for a job in a big hurry. I think I'm allergic to that sort of show.

Actually, pretty much all studies show that the vast majority of people do not work only for the money, and that salary is pretty far down the list of important, motivating factors for most employees. ....

Of course, you may have a job you hate that you do soley for cash. But, whilst this may seem the norm to you, it's not the norm for the vast majority of people.

OK. Perhaps you have hit the nail on the head. I don't dislike my job, I just have no promotion prospects, therefore I really do just turn up for the money and go home. But in this climate you can't be too fussy.

There is no mention anywhere of £15pw or £60pm.

    The doctor is fishing again.

Well I read another thread and clicked on an earlier news item. The wording is identical to OP quote, except the £15 - here if anyone wants to check themselves:
    http://www.mirror.co.uk/advice/money/2009/04/20/lay-off-payoff-up-30-115875-21291300/

The mention of JSA increasing is more likely to relate to contribution based (only paid for 6 months), which in some cases where income based top-ups are claimed for partners will actually mean no change in reality. Still, we'll all find out soon enough.....

    Hi All,

After reading this whole thread, I think everybody has missed what is right infront of their eyes.

The problem isnt scroungers, proffesional dolies, the unfortunate out of work or the amount of JSA and benefits available. This problem can be solved instantly by the media.

All our friends at ITV need to do is 'pull' Jeremy Kyle. It appears that he is directly connected to all of those that do not/can not, or simply will not work!

Problem solved, there will be a stampede at all Job centres, not to sign on, but to apply for jobs!!

However i do feel that we should leave the man alone, he is just making his own way in life and probably paying fairly high taxes :)

No sorry I disagree. Why should those with savings be penalised if they are made redundant? Just because they have not gone out and blown the lot and managed their money properly. They may be saving for private medical bills as the NHS can't be relied upon. Not everyone is insurable. In the US they recommend people have a years salary in the bank for emergencies. There would be nothing wrong with that practice here.

But people who have been redundant are not likely to sit for almost all of their lifes on the dole. They are the ones that are actively seeking employment.
The dole should be given to people that have been made redundant, but people that have never done a days work should not be allowed to have £6,000 in savings.

I just hope Alistair has sorted out my pay rise!

There are quite a few references to £15 if you google "Job Seekers Allowance budget" in the news.
  • it makes me mad i understand that there is some genuine people out there who can't work or have been made redundant but them who do not want to work its a disgrace, no wounder they don't want to work as the get more for not working i think they should be made to earn this money and be regulary assessed to see if they can work and are looking for if not they should not get the benifit
