I've had a few caterpillers this year, not many though, although I don't recall ever having them before.
Melonade, what type of pea did you sow? Not every type of pea tastes good fresh, think about trying Alderman next year, still my favorite fresh.

Just checked the packet and we're growing Rondo - these are the bitter ones. The others are Pea Hurst Greenshaft - these aren't quite ready yet so I'm hoping they'll be better.

Thanks for the tip, I've scribbled the name down for next year and I'll definatley have a go at growing Alderman :T

I grew some greenshaft as well this year, well green something, I think there are two almost the same, they tasted nice as well. So you could be ok with them.

Someone mentioned about putting net up for the peas to grow up. I am a novice and a few weeks ago, I made a wigwam of canes and planted the seeds around the outside of the canes, and a courgette in the middle. WHAT TYPE OF NETTING DO I NEED, AND WHAT IS THE CHEAPEST OPTION, AS MY BUDGET IS ALL BUT GONE. (Oops! caps lock!!!!!)

depending on how tall your peas will grow you don't necessarily need anything expensive. i'm growing kelvedon wonder and what i did wsa to take an old rusty airer and mostly straighten it out down the middle of the bed with my peas in it, i used a hammer to tap it down far enough into the soil that it won't fall over.

then i sowed around this. as the peas started to come up i took some twine and some twigs. i tied one end of each piece of twine to a twig then staked that near a pea plant or two then trailed the twine up to the airer (the closer the plant is to the airer the lower the rung i used, it can figure it's own path out once it gets there) then i tied it on and so on and so forth. it looks a little odd but i'm so low on funds i just made do with what i had and it's working well

at first i had to go out and encourage a few of the peas to tangle themselves along the twine but they're fine now and i have many pea pods slowly getting bigger and bigger now (wish they'd do it a bit faster my daughter is a pea eating monster and drools whenever she sees them!) i find a lot of garden accessories are nice but few HAVE to be purchased, many times you can make perfectly good substitutions using what you have and a little ingenuity ;)

    Yes just pinch them out.
Start picking them when they have just started to fill the pods, when they are small like this they are lovely raw (well most are) and it will encourage more peas. When they get a bit bigger pick them to cook.
Just pick a few at different stages and see what you get, you'll soon get the hang of it.
    But keep picking!

i'm curious, we opened one pod the other day the pod was about 2 inches long but the peas were tiny (tasty though!) how long should it take to get bigger peas, more like what we buy from the shops? and should i just pick and pick and pick and then wait til the end fo the season to wait for the bigger ones?

how long does it normally take for kelvedon wonder to go from a pea pod appearing to regular size peas?
