Contact the previous owner of the car, tell them what you've found and ask them if they would like to collect it from you?0

It was a dealer and I'm absolutely certain he wont be in the least bit interested.Herman - MP for all!0

Bring it in to the police station and we will dispose of it safely and without interrogation or bullying. A simple explanation as above would suffice. Despite recent media coverage we are not a service to be feared.Middlers0

Don't believe them. They are lulling into a sense of false security. You will be detained for 42 days under the anti-terrorism act if you believe this poster!I consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?0 -

I was taken into an interview room for a lengthy interrogation and felt as though I was being treated as a criminal. Mind you this was 40 years ago and things have probably changed - for the worse no doubt!0

Phone the police and ask them, walking into the station waving a shotgun cartridge around may provoke a bit of a panic.
Please don't just put it in the rubbish, modern refuse trucks crush the rubbish, and whilst the likelyhood of it going off are small, there is a chance.
The other risk is that your rubbish goes to an incinerator, if its burnt will will almost definitely go off.0 -
uktyler, dont worry, I wont be putting it in the bin.
It's either the Police...or the sea.

If you take it to the cops, they may well be minded to make enquiries. thats what cops do. they are naturally suspicious. Either take it to a local gunsmith and see if he will take it off you,or throw it away somewhere where it wont do any damage,i.e a deep lake or similar.0

If you don't (and you appear not willing) want to go to the police, put the cartridge in a jar of water and let it soak for a week or two or more if you want. After a few weeks, the cartridge will have become dead.0

Lol.....my concern shows then?
I have a strong Police family background believe it or not, but one member left the Force purely because certain things didn't sit well with him and there were things he couldn't condone. I know there are a lot of good officers out there, but not all are. Knowing my luck, I'd get someone who was a bit power mad and the sight of a gun cartridge would be enough to give me a hard time.
Thank you for the water advice btw.
Edit: Btw, I accept my worry may well be irrational, but it's still a worry nonetheless.Herman - MP for all!0
