Well he'll certainly have a fun drive back via the west coast? Does he mean via Wales I wonder as gloucester is not really near a coast. Prob a hundred miles north to get to the coast nr liverpool.

Not quite, just a little left of B,ham to avoid 'spaghetti junction' then scenic route via lake district, blackpool, wigton and home through Glasgow. Not exactly coastal then.

Well I for one wish him good luck, being young is about taking risks, and treating yourself to nice things.

I am glad you found insurance without resulting to fronting it in someone else's name.

I hope your son enjoys the car, and it does not break down too often!

You may want to buy him a Haynes manual, so he can learn to do basic servicing and repairs himself, this will save him a lot of money in the long term, and he is young enough to learn and enjoy repairing his own car.

    A newly qualified 18 year old driver in a 1.6 156.

Oh dear. You can just see what's going to happen.

Yeah, he's coming home on an AA truck
  • Well,he couldnt answer the phone earlier as theres no hands free kit in the car but they just made their first fuel stop and he called home. They set off at 5.30 and kept going to get out of that terrential rain which is right up past Manchester.Almost at Blackpool now so they have made good time, been safe and he is enjoying the drive.Just another 3 hours of driving ahead of him now.
And what are his plans when he gets home?A shower first as he feels grotty after sleeping in the car,a quick lunch then straight back out to show gran his new car and take her out for some groceries.
Still crossing my fingers he gets back without incident but thats just being a paranoid mum,he is fine.

    Hi,

Suggest that if can get hold of him, get him to drive up M6 from Lancaster to Carlisle - driving through the Lakes on A roads will take him ages ... the M6 there is fairly quiet.

  • Thanks for the M6 advice. He just wants to get home now so although yesterday he planned to take in some scenery on the way he feels an extra hour or hour and a half is too much of a detour now.

Sorry, I may have misunderstood ... he is not going to drive up the M6? how else is he getting to Glasgow?

If he was at Blackpool an hour ago, then it is fairly easy to drive to the M6 & home from there.

That will be the quickest way home.
