My son is an intelligent an articulate young man with qualifications, but nevertheless he was out of work for nearly three years for a number of reasons. During this time he went on various New Deals and several work trials.

He got some voluntary work from one of the places he attended which gave him confidence and someone to give him a reference.

He then took another work trial and got a job at minimum wage. He enjoys this job and is still there two years later.

He was helped on his way by New Deal.

Just try it and don't assume that you don't need any help. You've not succeeded so far, have you?

  • I don't think so, most of these kind of jobs are terribly repetitive , thats not my kind of work.

I am more of a free spirit.
Well, go and live in a kibbutz or something then...

:( I never said anything like it was beneath me Thoroaks , its just I have a very high functioning mind, probably higher than you will ever know, and I get bored VERY easily. I just would not last in such a position.

Ican't help myself even though I know I should walk away but I have to say you sound really thick to me!

  • This type of person makes the rest of us that are unemployed look awful. Surely if his job is so highly specialised there aren't many people doing it so he should be able to get a job or start his own business "talking through your ****ole ltd" in his oh so highly specialised field.

I want to work in childcare but am currently trying desperately to get a job at a supermarket so that I can fund myself through college as opposed to sitting on my booty and letting everyone who is hardworking and scraping by, pay for it.
If your profession is highly specialised and you are looking for a job, you should post it on here because you never know that someone on here may be looking for someone just like you!!!!!

What about multitasking? Could your high functioning mind think about something stimulating at the same time as flipping burgers or pricing up socks?

These courses don't seem to last long - the bloke across the road from me gets sent on them every now and then and it always comes to nothing - when he goes for interviews the first thing he says is "I've got debts and 6 kids to feed so it's only fair to tell you before we go any further than I can't work for less than £500 a week in my pocket."

They leave him alone for a while after that, until it's time for the new course. I don't think he manages to get out of the courses themselves, except for getting the flu and nits.
