Mines is £55 but like others have said it's to mark the end of 4 years of studying with some fantastic friends :)
And that, is the priceless part ;)

The problem I have with this thread is the use of emotive language in the title:
    graduation ball robbery

No one is forcing you, under duress, to part with the £57: it is purely your own choice if you purchase tickets. If you could have an equally memorable night, with the people who are important to you at that time and can do it cheaper, that is your perogative.

Yes, the main prize could well be a £10 tesco voucher, but, somehow, I don't think so

So, you haven't heard of the bands; doesn't mean they are not worthy of a fee (incorporated into the price of the tickets) for performing. I hadn't heard of "Thistle Dubh" until your post, so I looked them up - - - - - sound interesting :D But then I'm open minded about music.

Wine: 3 bottles x 6 glasses per bottle = 18 glasses of wine. Just calculate how much those "glasses" of wine would cost you (no NUS card!) in any other establishment!

"Reports last year" may well have said the food was "very poor quality". But much depends on
    a) how much you value you personally place on the critique of those giving the report
    b) has the venue changed its suppliers in the past 12 months?
    c) Have they changed staff in the past 12 months?

There is no secret that there will be a "Graduation Ball" or a "Graduation Ceremony" to mark the occasion. This is known before you even attend Uni. So why (and I'm genuinely curious) do people post as if it is a major shock? These things cost money (we know they are not free).

So, are the threads really about the shock of not having budgeted?

I say again, for what you are getting, that is reasonable value indeed.

Maybe I've spent too long in the real world to not be shocked at the prices?

£200 would have to be a dinner ticket at one of the expensive colleges......which would have a 'famous' band and all food/drinks included as well as lots of activities lasting til the morning.....

I realise you didn't mean this to be remotely funny and are making a very valid serious point, and it's probably entirely down to my state of mind at the moment - 4 solid weeks of revision and don't feel like I've got very far.
But you made me giggle and I thank you for that :)

Ps. I'm 25, have spent most of my life in the 'real world' so I am in agreement with you, not being sarcastic.

yep, its completely student organised without any help from the university. which is why its not located in central manchester i think, with cost of venues there.

We have organised our ball at Ramada in Picadilly gardens - £35 per head but with extras for cost of tickets/decor etc they are £38. You get a three course meal, bucks fizz reception, half a bottle of wine pp and DJ and room hire.

The graduation ceremony is at the Lowry and extra tickets are £12.50 but we go free (don't know about gowns etc).

Well thats pretty good! I assume that you're at Salford? If your grad thing is in the Lowry...

For my course we're doing a drinks reception/food etc. Paying a tenner so its not half bad.
  • My "graduation ball mini-break" is £210 for the weekend
No option to just go to the main saturday evening ball event...

It is to celebrate the end of a five year course (I do medicine) it's an awful lot of money to spend considering the extra you have to spend to go to something like that (dresses etc!)
  • My grad ball is £50 a ticket. We have each paid £20 deposit (per ticket) and the self-elected student who is running it has gone and had our deposits nicked out of her (unattended) bag lying around a computer lab at uni - about £2k gone!

I'm in the lucky position of being cross-faculty, and am now going to the other ball instead - £45 a ticket, and more convenient (5*) location. And an after party with free booze! Wonderful :D We get -

    Red carpet champagne reception
3 course meal with 1/2 bottle of wine each
    Personalised menu cards
After dinner ceilidh follwed by a DJ spinning your fave tunes from the past four years
    Entry to our official after-party
    Photographer

    Can't wait!
