My free McAfee runs out today after free with new dell laptop.
I have just downloaded Avira after reading this thread. Not very technically minded - do i have to run it myself everyday or does it do something itself ??

    Thanks !

I would uninstall McAfee and install Avira for your virus protection after that it will autoupdate everyday and you will see a pop up after the update asking you to purchase the PRO version or something just ignore it by pressing the close button. You will need a firewall you can go for something like PC Tools Firewall, which looks pretty good; download link here:

I got the full Kapersky suite free by going to trial buy and buying some ink cartridges.

You can also get it free if you have Barclays online banking.

If you have O2 broadband you get some McAffee licences free. I still chose not to use it though. Most of the big name security suites are overkill and slow down your computer.

I just use Avast free AV and that's it - no additional software firewall over and above the one in Windows - at home the router is plenty good enough and in the very unlikely event this netbook which only uses a 3G dongle got infected I'd just restore it from backup.

There are drive-by viruses around on sites that got hacked but in the main it's the sleazier areas of the web that are riskiest.

Use the MCAFEE REMOVAL TOOL (Simply uninstalling wont work with mcafee - it leaves bits behind)

Never go for McAfee or Norton, nearly all of the commercial anti-virus softwares will slow down your computer a significant amount. I use Avira AntiVirus, which is a great piece of software, really low on resource usage too. The only problem is that when it updates (with the free version) you get a pop-up asking if you want to buy the full version, which is pretty cheap, but i'd rather save the money and not pay for useless features.

    Hi

I have had Norton AntiVirus for about the last 4 years and it's done okay for me, but I was just wondering if there were any cheaper or free versions out there? Any ideas please?

    ESET NOD32

Thats the one you should get, download a trial. Go for the full version including firewall, its excellent.

It takes very little resources and is easy for the beginner to use also.

I recommend this to everyone, we never have any trouble with it.

Sorry to butt in on this thread but I have AVG and got this screen message (below) just now but when I click to download it tells me it will now cost me. So I will take the opportunity to go with Avira but do I just uninstall the AVG then install the Avira - anything to watch out for?

You must install new version 8.5 to stay protected from the latest viruses and web threats that appear each day.
