Not as a rule.. but they will let you in some circumstances, for instance.. if you've had a bad reaction to the cosmetic..

well, some do.. the queen of crabby SA's wouldn't let me exchange a face balm cream yesterday which she decided was a cosmetic, despite my explanation that it had irritated my skin..

An sa and then her manager refused an exchange on some suncream I took back. They said I could have taken the top off and tampered with the cream as it was not a sealed box. I asked them how I could know therefore, that they had not tampered with it before selling it to me? Jut as likely surely?

Anyway, I phoned customer service from my mobile in front of them, who asked to speak to the manager.

The lad on cs told me to put the manager on the phone and then proceeded to tell him how to do his job! The manager apologised to me and said he didn't know that he was allowed to refund or exchange suncream (manager of huge Boots did not know his companys own returns policy!)

I will do this again should I ever come up against this problem!

(and I had not even claimed that i had a reaction to the the suncream, just told them I did not want it, should be even more cut and dried in your case so good luck!)

    Hi Karnam :)

Sorry to hear you had such a miserable shop.

Quick question - Is your card a Chip & Pin card? Just before the first till crashed, had you entered your PIN to authorise the first transaction? Cos if you had and the authorisation had been accepted, then surely that sale would have been completed?

If this is the case, I'd make sure you let your bank know straightaway.

oh god! i did indeed enter my pin and it did accept it! it the till only crashed right at the end before the receipt came out!! im checking internet banking but none from boots yet..... if ive been charged twice, ubelievably i will go over my overdraft limit and will definately complain again!

ps im writing to boots today about yesterday. i honestly dont think i can bring across how terrible it was on the phone again.

I did this also and worked like a charm, you could see nasty SA getting into trouble!

Anyway, on the back of your AC is a 0845 number... this is the freephone alternative: 0800 915 0004 - write it on the back so you don't call the 0845 number ;)

hey there- not read back far enough to see how much there is about the free item when you spend 20 on baby, but just wanted to say I tried it with a 2 pack of pyjamas at £6 and they had quite a debate about it, it didn't go through automoatically so she did it herself for me. I then went and used my £5 voucher for a £5.50 No7 sun gift pack.

no the free item isnt going throughh and SAs are having to do it manually.

if anyone is following my story, ive just gone to the bank and checked my available balanace and it appears boots have charged me TWICE for the same transaction!! the till crashing made no difference and i am now over my overdraft limit thanks to them, as well as having to go back to that errible boots yet again in order to get a refund!!

Karnam - make sure you let your bank know that the SA in Boots convinced you that the till crashing had in effect voided the first transaction.

Given the near-instant speed of digital technology, the second you see "ACCEPTED" or "AUTHORISED" come up on the PIN display, then the shop has had your money.

Which bank are you with BTW? Others may have had similar experiences should you have trouble sorting it out?
