I'm so upset...I'll start from the beginning....

Me and my OH were living with his mum from May 08 until November 08 in a house she started renting in May (so we all moved in at the same time)

OH's mum moved out in November and we took over the tenancy on our own.

We informed the council that we were living there so we could pay the council tax and they said not to worry and just pay what his mum had been paying so we did....we got a letter last week saying that we owed almost £400 for the period November 08 - April 09 because as far as the council are concerned it was OH's mum paying the council tax until then not us. We though fine, we'll pay it - because the council are giving OH's mum a rebate on everything WE paid since November (so she is just going to give it back to us so we haven't lost anything - except time and patience)

Now, our gas, electric and water are all on pay as you go meters. When OH's mum moved in the landlord gave her the cards to top up the gas and the electric, when OH's mum moved out she gave the card to us.

Something went wrong with the gas last month and my OH called to get it sorted, only to be told that as he wasn't the account holder they couldn't talk to him. He explained the account holder was the landlord and they said it shouldn't be, it has to be my OH. So my OH gave them all the details and they set up an account for him.

Just got back from my mum's to find a letter from the gas company saying we owe £606 for the period November 08 - May 09 (basically we think it must be everything we paid towards the old account because it can't be a bill as we are pay as you go). Now we have a dilema because we have already paid this £606 over the last 6 months and can in no way pay it again (and why should we when we have already paid it???) I think they will rebate the old account holder OUR £606 (the landlord).

To make it worse we cant even call up to check anything until Tuesday!!! and then we have a fight with the landlord to get her to pay us our money back! I don't know what I'm going to do if they ask for this £606 to be paid asap - we don't have it and cant get it.

I'm so upset, we have been charged £1000 in a month for stuff we have already paid. I don't mind the council tax so much because now it's just a case of waiting for the cheque from them to get to OH's mum and then she will pay it back to us.

I'm 19 and OH is 20 and we have never lived away from home before and I'm so stressed! We have no debts but every single month there is another huge expense that pops up out of the blue (we have had unexpected water bills, mot failures, the deposit on the house after we had been told we won't need one, you name it!) I know it is just life but seriously, we are never going to get the chance to save ANYTHING at this rate. We have both been working full time for nearly 2 years and have nothing to show for it at all. At the moment we don't have a bed (we have a matress though :p) or wardrobe/chest of drawers to put our clothes in!

Sorry for ranting...I'd had a really good day until I got home :(

Oh Mel, I am so sorry to hear this, going through all this stress on should be an enjoyable bank holiday.....

Have you a good local MP?

I would get an email sent to him or her now, so they have your details as soon as their secretary opens the mail box on Tuesday morning.

Supply any evidence to them by email attachment, and ask them to intervene for you.

They should help you and not to forget the voting is coming up as well, so they will and should help you.

Give it a go, your MP should have the right leads here.

You will have a little weight lifted as soon as you send that email, its a start.;)
Good luck with this, it will be sorted, even though it should not have happened in the first place.

I take it you still have receipts or paperwork?

We haven't got any receipts for the gas because we would just get £20 for the week when we went to get the shopping in...my mum used to be on a meter when I was younger and there were never any problems so I didn't even think to keep them!

And when I was younger you would get a little token to put in the meter, but now it is all on a card (looks like a debit/credit card) and when my OH gave them all our details they told him to post the card we had been using (the landlords card) back to them. I assume this is how they know how much money we have put on it since November because we haven't had a meter reading done.

I'm so frustrated because until we ring the gas people on Tuesday to find out exactly why we are being charged £606 when we have already paid it (even though it was on the landlords card) and if they will be rebating the landlord (if they aren't rebating the landlord I don't know what I'm going to do - I won't just be emailing our local MP, I'd flippin well marry him if he could sort this out! :p). And then if they are rebating the landlord I just know she will kick up a fuss about paying it back to us - it took her 10 months to get insulation put in the loft! - which is part of the reason we had to spend £606 on gas over winter - it was sooo cold because there was NO insulation in the roof whatsoever (but that's another story;))

Why is everthing so difficult....is it always this difficult just to do normal day to day things like living!

And I've spent the last 6 months telling my OH its better to pay for the gas and electricity on a meter because you don't get any unexpected bills!!!!
