I don't really have anything to contribute, but just wanted to say thanks for continuing to post. I'm enjoying reading other people's thoughts as I try and make sense of market behaviour and what it means for investments.
It may not be long before it's worth drip-feeding back into general commodities. Maybe another 5% fall before I'm tempted to start.

Any thoughts on what you might invest in specifically? I have a holding in the commodities ETF XPSR (a good proxy for big miners indicated previously in this thread) which is just about break-even at this level. Also FXPO which is very volatile and is currently in the red.
ABG reversed right back down again! Long term its stronger then in 2011 at this price but right now its fallen on higher volume

A way to follow this apart from obviously the gold price might be looking at Randgold which is GOLD on the Nasdaq. It could fall some more in line with 2011 lows

I'm interested in gold miners but have no confidence in my ability to pick the "right" company (though I am tempted by RRS). I'm now looking at buying a world gold miner index tracker with the hope to reduce the risk somewhat:

ETFX DAXglobal Gold Mining Fund (AUCP)
    http://www.etfsecurities.com/fund/etfs_fund_gold_gb_en.asp

    A reasonable choice?

I've never invested in any specific commodity stocks and leave that to those that follow the individual one's on a regular basis. There are several people that do so on this thread. As general commodities are only about 10-15% of my portfolio I tend to look at an overall global picture relating to commodities and what's happening in the whole. Therefore I use one of the general commodity based funds available, First State Global Resources Fund, for my investments. The inherent volatility in commodities can make for some good returns if you are prepared to follow the markets closely and dip in & out, IMHO, but that also of course brings with it extra risk.

It's Easter weekend again....London Stock Exchange is closed for both Good Friday & Easter Monday. NYSE is closed on Good Friday, but open on Monday. I just hope nothing major happens over the long weekend, as there is then that feared situation when here in the UK you can't do anything much until Tuesday....._pale_ ;)

Yes, which is a bummer as Friday is the first day of the new tax year.

There is a big jobs number on friday and only futures will be open I think

I think this is just a holiday flush before it continues to waver up and down.
I bought some BP because I sold all at 510, its a safe bet at 450 I reckon though bad news from the court case is possible we already know its possible!

Tons of stuff I have is badly beaten, gold new low

HOIL new low for many years, no special reason.. They are valued at $579m

Websites tend to be out of date, this is from the interims. It was about 86p/share. They are drilling two wells currently and buying back a few shares here and there.

"Strong balance sheet with cash of approximately $353 million as at 30 September 2011, excluding $405 million related to the tax dispute with the Government of Uganda."

The tax dispute is ~100p/share on top of that. I wouldn't be betting against HOIL at these prices without some knowledge of the tax dispute. As it gets near 200p its a bit different.
The Russian operations at 420 bbl per day must be self sustaining...

Just seems super cheap to me. They'll win that court case unless laws can be changed after the fact.
Production sharing taxes vs exploration not CGT - just normal industry practise; who knows, Im no legal eagle but even Chavez has to repay seized assets

ABG new lowest price ever, goes ex div soon. Lots of stuff will soon, all good I reckon

If we do get a nasty selloff I want WEIR to flush out after losing 1700 as support and FRES with 4% div weeks away I want at 1468 but maybe not happening without pressure

    Probably.

I had just under £50k cash in flight from an old ISA of my wife's to BestInvest, and decided to put 75% back into the market today. I don't feel this was a great opportunity, hence keeping some back, but I do think a lot of the froth has been blown off.

Maybe we'll see another febrile, friable, frangible (*) summer, with buying opportunities whenever a sovereign state wobbles?

    (*) Not fungible, that's different!

Dipped my little toe back into the general commodities market again today. It's the first time I've done so for around a year, since selling out and taking profits at the end of Q1 2011. My gut feeling though is that there may well be some further falls south over the coming months, but, IMHO, you have to test the water at some point.

I'm salivating at the thought of another FTSE at 5000 during 2012 :D

Got loads more cash to take advantage of it this year
Faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

I just bought some natural gas via Cheasapeake. For less then I sold it at profit some time ago but yep its still a dog, value stock getting better value everyday
I buy it as a grand play on oil and weak dollar, etc

I still think market can go up ? Its struggling but it really hasnt done badly

I was going to buy FRES, WEIR or CHK and the prior two did well today. I do own HOC (+4%) and lots of normal stocks already, CHK is special. Im counting on silver to be very volatile

I still need more agriculture I think

+1 on reserves to buy with but I think FTSE 5000 (or lower) is a brief spike down only. Its an election year and stock ownership is a big thing in USA.
Its wrong but they do directly influence markets, this system is broken no doubt in my opinion
