Has anyone dabbled in spread betting? I know its not really an "investment" as such?
I opeened an account a few days ago with IG and I am taking it slow, I have taken up my first short position with Sports Direct @ 40p per point, stop loss at £1.08.
I have a "long" on Uniq PLC @ 50p per point, stop loss @ 39p.
I had a quick go on the indicies @ 10p per point but it really IS gambling, at least with individual shares you can do research you would with any other share.0 -
Im really the wrong person for spreadbets but I have used them. I got some igg shares because I thought it was growth industry and they were good yield too.
Its really best used for short term moves, so index bets might be 5 mins or so. People do use them for hours or even longer but really its about betting the usa open is going to plunge and making some very quick money that way, it can be calculated its just very risky because the stop loss kicks in so quick, you cant just hold it or weather the storm
This is a good thread to read - http://www.trade2win.com/boards/uk-indices/55348-wallstreet1928-analysis-live-calls-ftse-dax-s-p-aimed-help-new-traders-1732.html
Its the little guys way of acting like a daytrader, very easy to lose money because its unlikely that the average guy would have the knowledge or risk awareness. Definitly not impossible though, just dont bet any more you could not spend down the pub instead.
Not an investment at all imo, at most it could be used as a hedge

WICH is 7% discount to the nav but not sure why it'd rise alot exactly0 -
I have a spreadbet account I opened last year with GFT, was interested in the idea of tax free, unfortunately have not really used it much as I need to take the time to compare it with the real market, and things have just been too frantic since I opened it to spend the time on it. I do run their platform on a spare computer on my desk so I can compare their quotes to the real market, they seem accurate enough apart from the spread obviously, (this is for futures) So in theory, it should be possible to trade via them, much like you would trade the same products on the normal market, the principle would be the same.
I think the main reason they get a bad name is because they allow people to speculate on the market using a huge amount of leverage, with zero knowledge, at the end of the day in terms of trading the financial markets, a spreadbet is just another form of derivative product. I think "The Naked Trader" guy uses a spreadbet firm.Hope for the best.....Plan for the worst!

Typical spreadbet on an index I think would be to go long ftse 4:35 with a 5pt trailing stop loss, see how that turns out *not an actual trade
reasoning for gamble based off this trend break chart and a rising eur/jpy0 -
Market (S&P) still looks weak here could get a pullback to the 1030 areaHope for the best.....Plan for the worst!

Yea that was not a good bet but I think it shows how hard it is to call. I still think thats a good time of day to trend on shifting sentiment from day trading closing positions to out of hours speculators
In retrospect the dollar was strengthening around 4:30 so that was a deal breaker. uup and usd/jpy both up. I need a monitor full of currency graphs nearby
Next support on spy is 104.16 and its 104.3 presently so that'd be the next point of recovery to guess on
.18 right now, dropping too fast surely:eek: - this is when its guts or glory on the leveraged bets

LOL that'd be a bit of overkill for me, I run four, and could probably find a use for 1 or 2 more, but don't really need them.
SPY support, yes 104.16 S1 pivot, we get a clue there if they want to take it to the trendline.Hope for the best.....Plan for the worst!
