Hello all, I would like to start CD but I am very very very scared. And the biggest question of all........How much does it cost :o

Lisa - it's about £35-40 a week.. but when you consider you might spend £4-5 a day on lunch, not to mention grocery shopping it is actually cheaper than buying real food!!

Have you got much to lose? You need to have over a stone to lose...

noone would shout at you Becky! You're right Ketosis is an undesirable state of Diabetic as they don't produce their own insulin...

However on Cambridge ketosis is a desirable function and body is still producing it's own insulin so it's not dangerous (diabetics cannot do CD).... plus the body of an overweight person has a ready made fuel source in fat stores so does not *need* glycogen to burn... Cambridge speeds up the weight loss process by omitting the food-fuel burning stage, and staying in the fat-fuel burning stage by eliminiating unnecessary carbs from the diet...

It is radical, but i think we know that conventional diets don't work for everyone, and sometimes drastic measures are called for....

It's a 30 year old diet, sanctioned by BMA and strictly regulated by NICE guidelines etc... many hospitals use it as a VLCD plan for morbidly obese people preop... it really cannot be as dangerous as you state...

Plus there is the psychological side of things, it removes the relationship with food and means the person can hopefully re-educate themselves and avoid the same mistakes again...

There no difference in the ketosis state actually - its just that diabetics fall into it as a side effect of their disease if they dont take on insulin...here's the NHS direct stuff on the ketosis.

This is the NICE guidelines in plain English from here:
Your healthcare professional will probably recommend that you reduce the amount of food you eat, as well as being more active.

Adults should usually be advised to follow a low-fat diet, or one where the food you eat each day provides about 600 kilocalories (kcal) less than your body needs to stay the same weight. The diet should fit with healthy eating advice. You should be offered advice and regular appointments with a healthcare professional to help you follow the diet.

Sometimes, the healthcare professional may recommend a low-calorie diet, where your food provides only 1000 to 1600 kcal a day.

If you have a BMI over 30 and have stopped losing weight before reaching your target, your healthcare professional may suggest an additional course of action:
    • you follow a ‘very-low-calorie’ diet – this should not be for more than 12 weeks continuously, or
    • you follow a very-low-calorie diet for 2 to 4 days a week.
On a very-low-calorie diet, your food provides less than 1000 kcal a day.

You should never follow a diet that provides less than 600 kcal a day
unless this is being closely monitored by your doctor.

My emphasis - I agree that CD does work, but diets of less than 600 cals a day are starvation diets and fool the body into using up resources. I agree that many people may have issues surrounding food and consumption/activity levels - but I do worry about the effect that a starvation diet has on people's mental state...I've seen this first hand, but basically when you are starving the body one of the first things to go is the higher order brain functions. See here for more. This can very easily lead to a long term association with starvation and control which is just as dangerous as overeating.

Your bodies - your choice, but I just wanted to make sure you were aware of the full facts :o:o

But I'm going to shut up about it now...and go back to talking about weather :D:D
