Tried that just now - got a box marked
"Windows Update Standalone Installer", saying "Installer encountered an error: 0x8007043c. This service cannot be started in Safe Mode".

    Eeek! What next?!:D

Thank you Brian1945 for starting this thread off. I have had exactly the same problem (Windows XP Home; SP3) and I have difficulty understanding and executing many of the technical reply comments made elsewhere. I first approached Microsoft's Customer Service by email but .

HOWEVER thank you HappyIdiotTalk for your so simple instructions for a 64 year old. A life saver  !! I think you are rather over-modest in calling yourself an idiot!!

I'll sort out the Hijack This items now. I have Malwarebytes and use it regularly - there was nothing as of this morning on a quick scan, do you need me to run a full scan? I also did a scan with SuperAnti Spyware this morning - 1 tracking cookie detected, which I quarantined.

    Okay, will do.
As for your question about the dvd player, I use Windows Media Player - never tried the Toshiba one, and now that the sound is broken, I don't use any dvd player!!
Will run Malwarebytes full scan and post log. Cheers :T:T
