Windows Update Problem

I downloaded today's Windows Updates - 8 of them - but two did not install, KB956572 and KB959426. It went through the usual download - verify - install steps, but at the end those two just had the word "failed" beside them. After the required reboot the two updates were offered again, but again failed. Should I be bothered and if so how can I rectify the situation. Any ideas, please. NB I'm nervous about messing with the internals, so nothing too radical please. (Running XP Pro SP3 fully patched apart from the two above.)

I had same problem this afternoon (XP Pro SP3) and those two updates failed with error 0x8007054F. Tried to see if anyone was having this problem and only found this thread. Was going to download the updates manually, so thanks for the links. Installed OK now.:beer:

I had exactly the same problem, updates KB956572 and KB959426 always failed to install successfully no matter what I tried. (XP Home Edition, SP3)

The Microsoft sites wasted a lot of my time, all the solutions were dead ends or went round in circles.

But a Google search brought up good old Money Saving Expert, and HappyIdiotTalk's answers worked a treat. Well done !

Hi,
I've had a similar problem with my laptop. It's a Toshiba Satellite U300, running Windows Vista. I tried to install Security Update KB 950974 - it was on the automatic thing that pops up and tells you there are updates to install - no joy, despite numerous attempts!
I tried the solution above - getting the update directly from MS - and that didn't work either!
Any other suggestions? I also have the (reasonably common?) problem with no sound ("No Audio Output Device is Installed") - which I understand (from my Mum, who's been trying to sort this out for AGES) is due to an update causing the sound card drivers not to work - I think she's nearly at the point of fixing this though, so I just mention it in case the two problems are related?

What ERROR CODE comes up when you try?

Using the method outlined above - through the MS website, it doesn't give an error code, it just says: "The following updates were not installed" then gives the code number KB 950974.

When I try to install it through Windows Update, it says: Code 8007000D: Windows Update encountered an unknown error (helpful...)

No helpful things I can see online (at least not that I can decipher!) so any help would be fab.
