All caught up - what a few years you've had!
With regards to the donkeys, can you self-trim by walking them out on the road? I don't quite get enough road time in with my horse and pony to keep the feet completely under control (ideally they need around 3 hours of roadwork each week), but I only need the farrier every 12-16 weeks (even then, he rarely has to trim any hoof, just files down a little) and they both have fantastic feet since I switched them to a barefoot friendly diet. Lots of helpful people here if it's something you fancy looking into.0 -
Blimey Wordy...are you opening a zoo? You have cats, rabbits, dogs and now donkeys:eek:
Seriously though I think you should take more care of yourself and sleep before you do yourself a mischief.
Thankfully, I have no pets but I am entertained by the local wildlife - the woodpigeons love my lilac tree and it is to them what catnip is to cats. I also watch the squirrels which can be amusing although they were not amusing yesterday or today because they were busy on the fence so I am expecting a proliferation of the ruddy things soon:eek: Oh slugs...hate them...there are loads about because it has been so wet and I found one of them in my kitchen the other night - I picked it up with some paper towel and cursed that I only had a salt grinder so sprinkled the thing with salt but it kept trying to get away, in the end I put it outside and it made a bolt for the door...must have been a racing slug:rotfl: Oh, I seem to have more wildlife in my front garden besides the plethora of slugs and snails it would appear that I have a large fat toad:eek: I havent seen said toad but mum has when she has been digging over my front garden - she claims that it glares at her underneath the bushes. I hate toads and frogs.
I am very good at growing weeds in the garden - mum was quite generous and paid for a man to come out and strim the lawns, mow them and mark where the borders should be. Wish me luck as I have to mow the lawns this weekend and I confess that I have never mown a lawn in my life, I can use my free mower too as the folks doing the house clearance did not clear the shed so when I moved in I found a very nice Qualcast electric mower in there along with some very expensive terracotta tubs. In the kitchen mum had found some assorted tea towels and some very collectible embroidered tray cloths which she took home washed, starched and ironed for me - she gave them to me last weekend.
Don't fret about turning down work - sometimes you have to do that for your own sanity's sake.0 -
Thanks for link, Cazmanian_Minx. I'll look at that properly later. I'm not sure yet how frequently I'll need the farrier. The chap who sold me the donkeys said once a year, and someone up the road said every 6-8 weeks. I am hoping every 10-12 weeks at the most. Certainly some road work would be good for them, and I have thought that when I get them used to headcollars (another story - they are being exceedingly silly about them at the moment - trying to feed them carrots through the nose-band is just a joke to them and they look very pleased with themselves when they manage to nick the carrot without my having got the headcollar over their noses) that I might take them for a walk along the lane when the Tart and the cats go for their morning constitution. I'm also going to move them on to gravelly land when the ground gets soft - although it's already soft. Their feet definitely need some atttention at the moment, but I can't sort that out until they accept the headcollars.
I have managed to borrow a hutch from a neighbour, so daddy bunny can be released from the shed. I think it should be outside my house when I get home from work this evening, so I can sort it out tonight. From what I can tell without dismantling the nest, there are four baby bunnies - one pink and three black.
I am hatching a cunning plan for funding my farming enterprise. I know that a few donks and rabbits don't a farm make, but it pleases me to think of it as such, so just indulge me.
It is very quiet in the shop today - so I should be able to get a bit of proofreading done ... instead I am staring out the window longingly at the rare lovely weather and wishing I wasn't stuck inside selling passers-by ice-creams.
I need names for one black kitten, two donkeys and six rabbits.
I saved money last night by not attending the local pub where G-String Jim was putting in an appearance. The sacrifices I make to get out of debt ..."Green pastures are before me,

How did the lawn-mowing go, Horace? I am envious of your toad and frogs - I am thinking of importing some to eat the midges - they will end up being monster beasts the size of my little house.
What are you going to do with your garden long term?"Green pastures are before me,
Which yet I have not seen;"

Kitten (as yet unnamed):
It's very difficult to take a photo of a black kitten, especially when he is intent upon playing with a squashed furry beastie on the road (then he ate the squashed furry beastie, then he complained of tummy ache).
Mummy rabbit (as yet unnamed):
There are six babies (3 black, 2 white and 1 grey - I don't understand how this came about, as both mum and dad are almost completely black) - they are 8 days old now and have their fur, and their ears are a perfectly formed 2cm long.
And my dream boys (as yet unnamed):"Green pastures are before me,
Which yet I have not seen;"
I'd love to be a good example - instead, I am a horrible warning.0 -
Awwwww, love the donks0

Morning Wordsmith!
What handsome chaps (the donkeys). I think you should call them Brad and George (Pitt and Clooney just in case no one knows who they are)
Not sure on the bunnies. They wouldn't last 2 minutes here I'm afraid
Your burgeoning farm sounds just magnificent by the way - and you are sounding very content. I hope you are not just sounding, but feeling too.
How about Bolt for the kitten?Usain is a bit of a mouthful but somewhat topical at the moment. One of my workmates has a kitten called Dash, he has a dash of ginger running down his back and is fast as !!!! so the name fits well
Great to hear from you
