Went for a walk with the hound, then home to cook a plate of veg with rich onion and mushroom gravy, a glass of chilled white, a new book to start while sitting on the sofa with two moggies (who weren't sitting very close together) and a mutt, and complete silence in the house. Call me unadventurous - and a lot of people do - but quite frankly this is a perfect way to spend an evening for me.

Sounds idyllic to me, Wordsmith! Who needs adventures when they have good food, animals and a new book, and long, light evenings to boot?

:rotfl: I suspect Brian feels that what you had removed from him was priceless :D

I cannot do one-night stands. I get far too emotionally involved too quickly.

The kitten (note lack of name) just wants to be loved. I tried keeping her separate from the others, but between her and Brian they managed to get the bathroom door open and the little one tried bonding with Brian, who, it turns out, is not very avuncular. Mama cat is not very maternal and flounced up to the attic room. The tart, also not very maternal, sighed and rolled her eyes. Me, I picked the little thing up and gave her a cuddle. Big sigh.

I am a bit worried she might have flu (which is why I was trying to keep her separate from the others) - I had to soak open her eyes this morning as they were glued together. She's in the office with me, and is currently draped over my arm as I am typing. We are off to the vet this afternoon to get her checked out. However, twenty-four hours does not make a relationship and I have the phone number of someone who I hope might take her and give her a loving home ... preferably before I've had to fork out for the vet.

I'll try to keep to my resolve. A young kitten is not what I [STRIKE]want[/STRIKE] need at the moment.

I did manage to cook a meal last night. Pretty much a re-run of the night before, except this time my greens were cabbage. You do have to wonder at the wisdom of this with onion gravy, especially after lunch was baked beans. The trouble with being single and not having a freezer, is that the cabbage I bought yesterday is probably going to be dinner for about six days so that it's not wasted. Now, I do like cabbage, but a little variety would be good.

The couple I was hopeful would take the kitten have already got a new cat, called Harry. I did ask if Harry would like a friend, but they think not.

I took the kitten (he who will not be named to lessen the chances of becoming emotionally attached) (note also she has become he - I am not very good at this stuff) to the vet and he, the kitten-with-no-name, has flu. Which is apparently highly contagious. And my older cats aren't vaccinated against it. Hmmmm, now where can I find someone who is willing to take on a poorly kitten? Other than me, that is.

The vet said that I can give the kitten-with-no-name's antibiotics to the older cats if they start sneezing. This is all turning out very tricky, which I knew it would. He is very clingy, and doesn't want to lie anywhere other than draped over my arm.

And it cost €35 at the vet's, although I did get some free kitten food. Not forgetting the unplanned for mileage.

    Oh crikey,
I sense the menagerie is about to expand, if it hasn't already.... gulp. Mind you, Brian might take umbrage and move out for good, instead of bed hopping as he does at the moment.
What will you do with poorly kitten when you are being shop girl?

Hello you, in referance to one night stands, I am currently goping through the same thing at pressent.I started a relationship with a young lady that I went to visit.I inoccantly thought (ok so I am niave) this would be so we could spend bank holiday weekend to get to know each other better. No sooner had I got off the coach than she was all over me like a rather bad skin condition.Because I told her to cool down and did't except her advances she is now telling me she never wants to see me again and that I was stringing her along the whole time.In short I get what you mean, OHHH!!!!! and by the way I rely do simpathise with a certain gent in your life who was recantly emasculated(silently holds vigil)

SA, the menagerie is NOT going to expand. Kitten-with-no-name is purely passing through. He is coming to the shop with me for now. The mutt is not impressed with that. She likes to be the star attraction. It won't hurt to bring her down a peg or two.

DDpimp, you lead a much more exciting life than I do. My one-night stand was with said kitten! (No need to insert rude jokes.) Sorry it didn't work out with the lady, though. We will all be interested in hearing developments! I don't think Brian has noticed he's not "all there" - he was walking with a distinct swagger this morning. He, he.

Today's unexpected expense was €3 for a duck (plastic variety, SA), which is going to be raced down the river in town. If it is faster than all the other ducks, I will win €500.

Tonight I am not going to buy wine. Tonight I am not going to buy wine. Tonight I am not going to buy wine.

Oh poor flu-ey kitten :( - I do hope the others don't get it. And of course that someone will turn up to give kitten a home... how about you display him in shop window?!

Vet bill and mileage will hopefully be accruing you good karma somewhere...

Kitten-with-no-name is much brighter (and correspondingly much more annoying) this morning. Still gummy-eyed and sneezing, but seems to be recovering. I lost the top of my ink pad and foolishly left it on my desk, he walked over it and now we have little kitten paw prints over the desk and paperwork. Cat lady is due in today to take him away. She doesn't know yet that he has flu, so she may not be so keen.

I am handing out pensions all day, working in the shop from noon to close and doing some admin for a client (when I get off the internet).

It is a fabulous day here - after five weeks of greyness and cold. When we walked up the lane this morning, everything looked much greener, and the bees (or something else buzzy) were already busy in the hedgerows, the sun was shining off the lake, there was no traffic noise and we didn't see a soul. My gosh, it doesn't get much better than this. I love working, but I have to say it was a bit of a struggle coming in today.

No news moneywise - except I had to put €30 petrol in the car ... which reminds me, I forgot to pay for it! I'd best go out to the shop and do that. Oops. That also reminds me that I have to pay one of the other ladies for some yoghurt and cottage cheese she got for me the other day, about €9 I think. It's baking day, so I may have to sample some of the yummy cakes on offer, purely out of support for the domestic goddesses, you understand.

I phoned my solicitor yesterday to find out what the hold-up on the house sale is; she didn't know but said she would find out today. A tiny part of me still wants it not to go ahead - but it's a tiny part of my heart and not my head, so the bigger part of me will be very disheartened if the sale stalls now. If it does, I will have to give some serious consideration to moving back. But those are thoughts I don't need to have right now, so I will 'stand porter at the door of thought' and not let them into my head.

Best do some work, I think, as I have to be a shop girl at midday. What I want to do is go up to the Burren with missy mutt and spend the day walking and sea-gazing.
