Today's strike....

I was just wondering if today's strike had affected anyone? I personally don't have lectures this week so didn't feel the brunt of it, but I always feel that the media play it up as being the worst thing to happen! Essays and exams won't get marked, that's right they won't. Not today at least but they will tomorrow.

The most amusing thing I saw was a sign outside one of my department buildings saying 'OFFICIAL PICKET'....but there was noone there!

I suppose a rise in salary for lecturers goes hand in hand with a rise in fees for future students....where else will the money come from?

Today wasn't really a problem for me either....

However, the leaflets the lecturers on the pickett line were giving out did say that they would boycott assesments as future action.. which shouldn't happen really.

It isn't the media that was bigging that up I'm afraid. It was the actual information the lecturers were giving to students!!!!!!! I haven't even watched the news yet...

I found out today lecturers get between £35-60k. Most at the computer department I was told get up to the higher end of that, especially the more respected long term lecturers which I can understand. That fact makes me rather disgruntled, as they want even more!

That was until i read the leaflet they were giving out which mentioned that they were promised a pay rise before 2001. However, between 2001 and 2004, they received no rise, and the Vice-Chancellor's all received a rise of totalling 25% over those 3 years...

25%!!!!!!!!! :O Thats mental. Especially when its money promised to lecturers...

At the end of the day, I'm a student. I go to uni to learn, study, do work, and get a degree. The lecturers should NOT be doing stunts to effect this. At the same time I don't think a one day strike effected us too much. An assesment boycott will be way too far however...

    :)

they would choose a day where i have no lectures whatsoever wouldnt they  :D

I don't disagree with them striking it is their right to after all. Saved me getting up early today anyway.
At my uni they had some notice up I only saw it by chance and it was saying that the VC got an 11.5% raise and they got none last year and all the other average raises like for the personnel manager and stuff, they did explain it will come from the extra money available but not just that the fact is that entry rates are predicted to increase so there would be more money regardless.

  • The leaflets at my uni said they only get a minimum of £28k. What they fail to mention is that a large proportion of lecturers earn money as part of outside consultancies. I did Geology and Geography as my first degree and am doing Environmental Engineering as my second and my lecturers (old and new) can charge a fortune in consultancy fees/expenses etc.

I almost had a day off...I should only have had a one-hour tutorial, and that was cancelled. So, I didnt really suffer as a result of the strike..although the non-assessment of future work will probably affect me.
My flat-mate however should have had a 6 hour day...and has had the whole day off, and he is very miffed about it because he's missing out on lecture material that now won't be covered so that the lecturers can finish the modules on time.

My main bug-bear with this is...my dad (not a lecturer) has been promised pay-rises over the last few years, but he hasn't got any more. Same for my mum. But, they don't go on strike about it. And they are both on less than the 35k mentioned by Mercilesskiller.

    Spot on.

I agree strike action is sometimes necessary.. but is this occassion actually necessary? I know a few lectureres who strongly disagreed with the strike.. Now as far as I can see.. if the situation was that bad.. everyone would agree right?

To be quite honest though.. its union action so we can't do anything about it eh? At the end of the day, if there is an assesment boycott where they refuse to mark assesments thus delaying graduations and re-tests, it would be a complete joke.

Sorry to get political.. but we really do need a party in charge who don't cause more problems to the youth of today...

Its not the strike that bothers me... its the "action in view of a strike" that does. IT means no summative assessed work will be marked for a while - and as Im a third year doing important assessed seminars and just finished my dissertation, it could have come at a slightly better time of the year!

As an archaeology graduate I wish I could get anything like a lecturers salary within a few years!!

To be honest, it'll be sorted by then imho. Not by them getting a pay rise, but either more promises made, Government interference or any other union related methods I suppose! Either way, assesment boycott's would surely bring more risk than necessary to their jobs or even legal actioun lol!

Linzibean.. my personal advice is try not to worry about something in the future that's out of your control. All we can do is do our work, hand it in on time.. and wait.. so why should union action effect what we do :)

As with all jobs there are people who really need the money to survive and those who don't have a family to keep etc. Maybe the ones that opposed the strikes either already get a high rate and the pay rise may not affect them as much or maybe they are have other forms of income.
In my opinion people do depend on pay rises to live and not giving one for 4 years if thats the case is not acceptable so they needed to do something about it, would we honestly be talking about it if they just put up a couple of posters saying it wasn't fair?

The assessment boycott meant that we were supposed to have a midterm on friday, which we dont now, although the one for another module on monday is still on. How on earth does that work?

And yes I suppose im happy that the midterm is cancelled because I am struggling a bit at the minute, but then all that module will rest on the exam as there is no coursework, which stresses me out rather!
