MercilessKiller, I think you may want to learn the difference between effect and affect. Just while you're still at uni, of course :)

I found out today lecturers get between £35-60k. Most at the computer department I was told get up to the higher end of that, especially the more respected long term lecturers which I can understand. That fact makes me rather disgruntled, as they want even more!

You found out absolute utter bollox.

As someone who has just finished being a student and is now university staff I have the national pay scales for university staff. I won't post the chart up but I will tell you that Lecturer A grade goes from approx 24-28K, Lecturer B from there to about 38K, then Senior Lecturer from there to about 43K. That rather puts your 35-60K into perspective.

Of course if some ultra-big wig just happens to be lecturing they may get more but the point is then they are being paid for their other work. Even lecturer A's are just being paid post doc salary with a little extra for teaching you. When you conisder that to get even to A grade they have gone through degree, masters, PhD, and then a postdoc or two it rather illustrates that the career ladder is rather less favorable than in other disiplines.

Just adding some balance to the argument.

    Dont make me laugh mate.

You don't have to call someones research "complete utter bollox" because you disagree.. stubborness! At least find out where I did my research.. want to know..? huh..?

How about CURRENT university staff and lecturers.. Now maybe the people I spoke to just don't know anyone under £35k, or maybe its very different for different uni's... but still

    Now shut up.. :/

You're not specifying their ages, length of service, what other tasks they are responsible for. They don't just get paid for teaching students!

if uni vice chancellors didnt give themsevles such stupidly big payrises for seeming little work there would be more money to go round for starters.

there is so much contention regarding our VC at the mo, how he is still in office is somewhat beyond me

I'm a student. I don't care what they get paid for. I care that I go to uni and have lectures and tutorials to attend. If not, I care about whats going on with the ridiculousl amounts of money i'm paying to attend.

If they're not happy with their pay, ok.. fine.. but why let it effect/affect (lol) a LOT of students by causing un-needed stress etc...

Ages.. common sense.. the older/longer at the uni, the more they're getting paid

Its also fairly obvious they do a lot more than "just" teach... but even so.. they're experts in their fields, so if the pay is so so so appauling.. why aren't they in a specialised job regarding their field?

    My networking tutor has
    CCNA 1,2,3,4
    CCNP 1,2,3,4

Now, with a full CCNA and CCNP, he is an incredibly intelligent specialist in his subject. He also looks around 45+ thus I'd guarentee a guy of this intelligence is getting his money's worth!!

If he was getting "peanuts" he wouldn't be a lecturer. End of. So the strike is prob more of a "vice chancellor got more, we want more" rather than "omg slave labour help us"

Whether its right or wrong, we pay for lectures.. we should get our lectures.

    EDIT:
    pavlovs_dog:
I completely agree with your post. I personally blame the VC for their own unjustified pay rises rather than not pay rising the lecturers.. if they kept their own wages constant lecturers wouldn't be able to complain as much. It just means their more justified to strike and the VC's shooting themselves in the foot :T

It doesn't follow that because he is incredibly intelligent that he is being payed at an appropriate level for his skills and qualifications - maybe if he doesn't get what he wants he will move on, then the department will loose his skills and the students will suffer.

You ought to get payed at an appropriate level for your skills, that means if you are worth 60K you ought to get it - I think a lot of lecturers are rather embarassed about their lack of pay, so tend to keep quiet about it.

You will also find that lecturers salaries vary generally up to 36K, anymore than this and a significant proportion of their time is spent on admin / management duties. So universities reward lecturers for not lecturing? If I was a student I would be annoyed about this.

    How come?

Personally I want to go to a lecture of decent quality, and go to practical sessions which are worthwhile, and come out of uni with an excellent degree and understanding of the subject.

Why does it matter to me what work the lecturers doing? Ok if I was the lecturer I'd be very unhappy, but I'm not. I'm just a student who's paying for an education..

Lecturers are wasters who couldn't make it in the "real" world. They are already over-paid for the number of hours they do in a week, along with the huge amounts of leave and holidays they get.

    They can go swivel.

If they are so intelligent, they can go do their 36 hour weeks, 25 days leave with no expenses and no paid travel in the private sector. See how long they last.
