I dont know if Im allowed to scan my notes and PROVE my wound was leaking for days ??

No need to, I believe you, that's why I can't understand why, with a leaking wound, that you would let them take the stitches out earlier than the hospital had told you. Medical staff aren't infallible unfortunately, I don't say that to excuse them, but people need to remember that mistakes are made and if you see one being made, refuse to accept it. At the end of the day it's you that has suffered from this, if you had been more assertive, you might not have suffered as much. I'm not blaming you for their mistakes but you could have refused to let her take them out until you had a second opinion from your gp.

P.S. when you type in capitals you're shouting in people's eyeballs ;)

So - people shouldn't complain if they get third rate care and mistakes are made that lead to suffering and pain? How will anyone learn and develop and make necessary changes? If nobody had ever complained about getting MRSA then would we have had the changes in practise we've seen over the past few years? Should everyone have shut up and taken it on the chin because we're all 'doing our best in difficult circumstances'? That's BS. Our NHS is free at the point of delivery but it's not free of charge. We pay for this service and it should be up to scratch. If it's not then you make it known.

I'm not saying don't complain, do so if that is what you want, I'm just telling you the reality of doing so. Yes the NHS is a free service but nurses, midwives and doctors are tax payers too and service users and don't deserve to be used as battering rams. Beds are scarce and it is not their fault if there are not enough beds to accommodate everyone, they were probably on the cusp of closing the maternity unit due to bed blockage.

The way NHS complaints are dealt with have changed in the last few weeks. If you want to make a complaint about treatment, you will be contacted by phone usually and asked what exactly it is you wish to complain about. Most people have a general rant and aren't specific when they complain so it will help if you can list your exact issues in your letter. Once the complaints department and you have agreed what you exact issues are they will then forward this on to the department concerned with a timeframe (which may or may not be extended). You will then get a written response and if you want you can ask for a face to face meeting with someone from the department you are complaining about.

I've just read this thread, and I am quite shocked to be honest.

This woman had had six babies and has smoked heavily throughout each of these pregnancies. Now I can just about understand that you might be addicted to cigarettes and think you will be able to give up while pregnant, and discover during your first pregnancy that you can't, but to then go on and subject five more children to all the health risks which smoking whilst pregnant and around a newborn entails beggars belief.

She was warned that the fact that she was a heavy smoker meant that she was more likely to have complications following her c-section, and that's exactly what happened. She couldn't give a stuff about the effect her fags would have on the health of her babies, but now that they've had an effect on her health she's up in arms, and raging to blame the medical staff for this.

As others have said, all c sections whether elective or not carry risks. I had one with my first child, and the scar opened after the birth and got infected. Fortunately it wasn't too bad for me, as I wasn't a heavy smoker during my pregnancy, so I healed fast. However it wasn't the medical professionals fault that this happened to me, and yes it happened to me the day I was discharged from hospital too, and the same thing has happened to friends who also haven't lead lifestyles which greatly increase the risks.

As for breast feeding, I was very ill after the birth of my second child, and not able to breast feed, or express, for 10 days. My little one was still able to breast feed, though it was difficult to establish it, and required some sacrifices on my part to make sure she got there.

But you don't actually come across as the kind of woman who is prepared to make a great deal of sacrifice of your own desires for the sake of your children

I really hope you take a long hard look at yourself before you sue the NHS for what happened to you, and be honest enough to recognise that you were more to blame for what happened to you than anyone else was. At the end of the day, no one died, and the worst that happened was that you endured more discomfort and illness after the birth than you expected. As has each of your six children, I expect and will continue to do so whilst living under your roof unless you can control your smoking.

ouch! She did say she doesn't smoke in the house.

The thing is, smoker or not, there's been a mistake somewhere along the line, unless she misheard the information about the ten days. She is sure it was said, but staff don't seem to have any record of it so that's quite a problem I think? If it had been in the notes and followed then perhaps the whole situation afterwards might have been avoided?

I don't want to come around as having a go at you but I think despite you saying you are trying to kick the habit I don't get that because surely any mother realises that smoking is detrimental to one's health and second hand smoke is even worse. Although you smoke outside the smell still lingers on your clothes and the children will still smell it. I am not a smoker and never have been but if I were I would do anything to kick the habit because that is what's best for my babies and not myself. I find people who say they are trying etc and have kids are not trying hard enough. Look at your kids surely they want you around for the rest of there lives, and furthermore seeing your future grandchildren but if you continue as you are doing then you healh will most certainly become worse and obviously your problems with your operation should open your eyes to see that smoking is what's the problem here....

In your case, it was no one's fault and you were happy with the management. In OP's case, it may be her fault but she is not happy with the management.

What's mismanagement is mismanagement whether it happens to a smoker or a non-smoker. Yes midwives, doctors and nurses are under pressure - if their demands are not effective in sorting out the current situation then public complaints is the next step. OP may be mistaken, there may not be mismanagement (which is likely) but only miscommunication, she still has a right to find out. At the end of the day someone could have died and her complaints may prevent a couple of deaths.

I blame people like you for the current situation in the NHS which has resulted in staff putting up with unnecessary stress as the management thinks everything is hunky dory because there are no complaints. BTW, I am a part of the NHS too and I actively encourage people to demand answers or communicate to clarify what they do not understand. Workload or stress is no excuse for poor patient management, which is the issure here.

Wow there are a lot of heartless self ritious people on this thread. The OP deserves the best treatment available same as everyone else. If she did sue that is also her choice.
If nothing else it would make some members of staff listen when women say there is something wrong.
