Why did you let the midwife/nurse take the staples out if you know they were supposed to be in 10 days?!

-to be fair it is quite hard to challenge a medical professional when they are telling you they know what is right - some people will find this easier than others -

we only know one side of the storey here , but if what lynn says is true and she was discharged with an oozing wound then she should register a complaint .. this is not good practice and should not happen .. wether she smokes or not~!

i work in maternity and know this should not be happening .. some people do complain about silly (imo) things but this should be highlighted

I agree that a complaint should be made but I also think the OP should take some responsibility. She's not a young mum with her first child, any one with any sense would have demanded an examination by a doctor in these circumstances, even their gp, before letting them remove the staples.

  • OP, I have just read through this whole thread and I agree that you should certainly have stopped smoking before trying to concieve another baby, at the very least as soon as you found out you were pregnant - it is one of my pet hates when I see pregnant woman smoking.

I don't smoke so can't understand why people can't just stop! Would be excellent if you could though wouldn't it.

Please, please try again, my mam died a few years ago and has missed out on so much with my two beautiful children

You have certainly had a rough time of it since the birth but I can't help thinking that if you are unhappy that you missed out on so much time with him you should just put it behind you and move on. Enjoy your beautiful baby..... BTW why does he not have a name. My DS was named after our anesthatist as he was so nice to me and OH - obviously not appropriate in this case though:D

In all honesty what do you want to happen, will it really help if you find out that X was responsible and Y should have done something different. :beer:for you.

In my job, when someone says they want answers, it usually turns out that they are not so interested in the answers - its the compensation that they are looking for. I am not saying that this is true in your case so please don't take offence. Even if you were looking at compensation, this would not be a bad thing as you had a horrible experience, I am rambling now aren't I?

Whatever you do, don't forget to concentrate on getting on better and enjoying your baby

thanks for your reply, believe me I hate myself for smoking, my father died of smoking related illness, I use to cry with my dr who was very supportive, I am and will STOP for the sake of my lovely children and loving supportive partner and of course my health.

I am not looking for compensation..just answers as to why so many mistakes were made. And to save 1 other mum going through what I went through.

The day I was discharged I CRIED AND CRIED AND PLEADED with doctor and matron not to discharge me because I knew my body and new it wasnt right...my requests were IGNORED . Dr was called or SOH as noted on my "notes" but she was called away to A&E so it was forgotton and I was sent home!!

What am I suppose to do when MATRON SAYS I MUST GO HOME ???

regarding names we have a few but my partner wanted to wait until I was so not drugged up and have a clear head, our last son Jayden took 5 wks to name :)

A doctor looked at my wound daily even after "gushing fluid" on day 3,4,5 and said its not infected nice clean sealed wound !! I said well where is fluid coming from as its puddles not little bits as I said nurse had saw my floor, and the answer I got was ummm dont know!!!

It was not staples, It was reinforced stitches with beads each end

If I was your partner i'd've raised hell about you smoking throughout the pregnancy & insisted you stop before conception. I understand you're upset & have the complaint but it does sound like you brought it on yourself, if the Midwife had no notes (Which I agree should've been there), what could she do? As you said (No disrespect meant but you're not medically trained I don't think?) or as her boss & maybe experience says? Maybe they get alot of patients claiming someone said x/y or z was ok? I'm not saying you're wrong but maybe that's why the Midwife removed them, could nobody have contacted the Dr who said this? Surely hanging on to speak to him wouldn't have hurt anyone?

What could the midwife/midwives do? They could have contacted a 'Doctor' as this is not 'routine normal' stuff they are dealing with. No the OP did not bring it on herself. This is like saying a prostiture brought the rape on herself. You may have your views about smoking, it doesn't mean that concerns should not be raised about her management. Midwife had no business assuming this is routine as routine no one gets reinforced sutures and should have delayed suture removal until further clarification with a doctor was obtained.

OP - A discharge summary is a detailed letter to your GP. A discharge letter, which is now-a-days saved on the electronic system and a paper copy is sent to the GP is a less than a page and should have gone out within a day or two of discharge. Do not believe anyone if they say it's not the case. Your midwives are attached to your GP surgery (kind of) and should have been made aware of any problems flagged up by the hospital, if they were flagged up, and if there was a dishcharge letter.

First of all, congratulations on the birth of your baby.
It sounds like you have had a terrible experience and you are right to want answers/an explanation of what happened. I hope you get a quick reply to your complaint (I believe the complaints dept as a set time to reply in - you should be able to find out on the hospital website). I think PALS is more for informal queries than serious complaints - although PALS should be able to offer advice of how to complain/obtain notes etc.
