if you feel your meter is still faulty, you can insist on having a check meter installed which runs alongside your regular meter to check that your regular one is running correctly. Some companies will charge you if it is found that there isnt a problem with your meter. Ring your supplier with all the meter reads and info you have given on here. If the customer advisor will not help you properly then ask to speak to a manager. In fact insist. The tell them you will not take no for an answer and that you will take this further. The manager should then arrange for this to be done. If necessary write to the chairman of the company. just make sure you take details of everyones names and times you called. But above all else, BE FIRM AND INSISTENT

Hi there catenorfolk. I think we are going to ask about a check meter but they are £95 plus vat and so I want to rule out everything possiable first. We are already paying £220 a month for gas and electricity and if it us who are in the wrong I don't want to fork out any extra cash. I did turn off all the electricity today and the meter didn't move..so it isn't that. Yesterday we were all out of the house all day and only half of us were in in the evening and we still managed to use 21kw of electricity. the underfloor heating is still off and no one was playing any video games or anything. I haven't got any other bright ideas. So if at the weekend we check to see if the day meter isn't going around at night I will contact them because I am completely stumped.

just trying to have a think now!!!!
  • Just make sure that when you switch the electric off at the main switch for a while to take a full reading, and leave it as long as possible to eliminate room for error, and look at the wiring on the meter to make sure it hasn't been tampered with.
Has the usage always been that high?
    Nothing to see here

Hi cozworth806 I left it off for an hour . I am not sure if it has always been that high because to be honest until I read in the forums on here I didn't even realise it was unusally high. I will look into that tonight after work. I don't think the meter has been tampered with but it was moved about 5 years ago when we had an extension.

    Hi teachergirl

Just a quick note to clarify the position with check meters.

They cost £93 which includes VAT.

If you feel you have come to a dead end with all your tests please call our consumption team on 0845 301 4922.

They will go through your usage looking at your property and appliances.

After this, if you still feel you need a check meter fitting ask this team. As long as you are prepared to pay this sum in advance they will arrange for a check meter to be fitted.

    Hope this helps. :)

My washing machine uses a third of a unit for a 30deg wash. Dishwasher uses 1.75 units on economy programme.

    Hi,

With my electricity meter plugged in, I have also noticed that lowering the temperature is a great way to save electricity. I have noticed that it's early in the wash the electricity meter is going up the most... And I assume this is when the water is heating up.
I have done this observations on my washing machine, because that's the one I use the most. My dishwasher runs about once a week. (I live alone.)

Talked to a lady at Eon today.Sorry Malc but it wasn't very productive. I explained that I felt I was using excessive energy and she basically didn't seem to understand. Eventually we went through my appliances.I said I had a fridge and 2 freezers..ah she said these can use up to 17kw a day. We just have to find where your other 13kw are coming from. I told her we had two televisions and a computer, that with a washing machine and a dishwasher seemed to be enough as far as she was concerned. I tried really hard to make her understand I wasn't disputing what the meter said or the cost but as I am trying to be green I don't understand how I can be using three times the national average of electricity. Anyway hubby is going out to read the meter at 1.00am tonight so we can see if the day meter is going around in the night. I also made my hubby pull out the fridge and the freezer so I can take accurate meter readings to see how much electricity they are using. The grand total is less than 4KW per day, so much for up to 17kw and that is with the fridge being really ancient as well. If we don't discover anything tonight then I think we will have to get the meter checked. We have really run out of ideas.

  • I personally love those per plug devices, if an Owl energy monitor is like roughly looking at your overall calorie count for an 'energy efficient diet', then a per plug device is like the nutritional information on the side of a chocolate bar, etc. Only trouble is as you found out, is that not everything has a plug or an easily accessible plug.

Might be time to break out excel or some other spreadsheet program, list everything with a plug that you can measure. From the readings taken by the monitor and from you knowing how long each appliance is used, you should be able to build up a picture of how all your appliances add up to your daily figure. This just costs time instead of money, after that...

then sadly it might have to come down to a check meter, however if it is the meter, you get the deposit money back, a new functioning meter and therefore the savings going forward and some compensation in what you have over paid.

As an employee of E.ON I'm also sorry to hear about the customer service you received. If you go back again with a spreadsheet listing what each device is using and the difference between that and your meter readings you should get taken more seriously, like you should have been the first time around... If they still don't take you seriously ask to speak to their manager as what you have is a consumption query.
  • Hi ya I am single and live in a one bedroom flat I use one storage heater have a fridge freezer use a shower telly and pc and play station. My annual electric bill was £1086 and have just found out that the control for my water heater was not working for off peak and would only heat on boost. My flat is owned by a housing association, should I try and claim back a rebate from the association, has anyone else been in the same position. I would love to hear what you guys think, do you think this is too high for one person.
    Kindest Regards
