Electricity useage really high?

  • Hi there,
These are just the electricity readings. We have economy 7 electricity and ordinary gas. We tend to use the washing machine overnight and the dishwasher. The electricity is charged at different tariffs but 10498 is my total Kw per year. I'm afraid we use gas on top of this!! They are the actual readings taken by Eon.

It's likely that your electricity is costing you more on an Economy 7 tariff since you only use about 25% of total at night. Would see about getting that switched.

You've used twice as much as we have this year. This is for:

Run washing machine and dishwasher at least once a day
Tumble drier couple of hours a week winter
Dehumidifier four hours a day winter
TV and Sky+ 8pm-midnight every day
TV and Sky + during the day sometimes in school hols
TV and xbox 6-12 hours a day
4 laptops + router all day, off at night
    Large fridge and large freezer
    Security light
    Four electric blannkets winter
Lots of phones, ipods, PSPs etc charging
    Low energy bulbs everywhere
    Power tools un the summer
    Stereo on most of day

Economy 7 is for people without gas who have storage heaters and
hot water immersion heaters, if you now have gas central heating why
are you still on a economy 7 tariff?

You are paying a much higher day rate then you need to be. and not getting any value from the night rate anymore, switch to a normal single rate tariff.
  • I had already wondered about whether or not the economy 7 electricity was worth it. One of the things I was looking at as I am considering switching my supplier. We inherited the economy 7 with the house. It will be nice not to be woken up by the very noisy washing machine going on overnight!!!! I still am at a loss to see how we use double the amont you do.(magentasue) we have the same amount of computers but they are off in the day. No sky (much to my hubbys disgust!) I only wash clothes two or three times a week(large drum machine.) Tumble dryer about the same as you. No electric blankets and no dehumidifier and definately no power tools unless I am paying someone else to use them!!!!!!!
One fish pond and one small tropical fish tank for one small fish(yes I know this is a waste but I can't get rid of it!) I will post later when we can see how much my family have used in one day. By the way someone else asked if we had digital or dial meters I think they are the old dial type. Thanks again.

O.K. here are my first 24 hour results. I have used 7kw on low and 20Kw on high in 24 hours.
I have used the dishwasher once and the washing machine and we have taken three showers. No excessive TV watching or games playing as we were all out last night!

That pretty much proves E7 is bad for you, get off it ASAP

7kwh in seven hours with everyone in bed for all or most of it? How?

How much does that fish tank cost to run?

Hmmm I hadn't thought of that.No idea. Well the dishwasher goes on over night. (it is an A+ rating.)The fish tank is really quite small and I am sure doesn't cost that much.I am going to check the dial on the nighttime one again later because it looked like it was still going around in the day. My son was up late as he has just got back from America but I'm afraid that only adds one computer to the equation.

7kwh in a seven hour period is high. Our energy monitor shows 1kwh in the evenings when we have two TVs + attached, all laptops on and several lights on. When I get up and I haven't turned on much more than the radio, it's about 100-200watts. I wonder if your fridge and/or freezer are very old and inefficient or faulty?

The only thing that is old is the fridge.10+ years and I am thinking I should replace it.Would it make that much difference? The freezer is less than 6 months old and was bought via the energy saving trust as it is so low in consumption.
