MONEY MORAL DILEMMA. Would you give a stranger £3?

  • I wouldn't either; for the scam reasons above, and also because I won't get my wallet out where someone would have the chance to grab it. After having a 13 year old girl try and grab my mobile off of me after asking me for the time (and only failing to get it because i was holding on to it very tightly!) I don't trust anyone in the street!
    Sum quod sum.

No. I would say "I don't have any money" and otherwise ignore her.

If she's genuine she'll find some other way to get home - say, calling a friend reserve charge to pick her up or buy a ticket online. Or, frankly, walking, because if it's a £3 ticket it can't be that far.
  • yes definitely!

i've also handed over 20Ps to people who can't find change for the loo, given checkout staff a chocolate, etc. it's called Random Acts of Kindness*, let's make the world a better place with more of them.

besides, i would very much hope that someone would help me if i were in trouble.

    * lots of info online, but basically, you go around doing nice stuff for other people, usually strangers and usually anonymously
Boyfriend & I have saved £12K in two years, thanks to careful budgeting and keeping a record of what we spend. I've never paid myself this amount of money before - it feels great!

Agree completely! I work in a pub and if there's an old lady struggling to find 5p for her cup of tea I always stick it in out of my tips. I once ended up paying for someone's entire meal cos thay had "forgotten their money", okay some may call me stupid but I just hope that when I could do with some help there would be someone there to help me in the same way!

I would give the money if i had it as I would never forgive myself if she were genuine and I turned her away later to see her on 'missing' TV show. What is £3 compared to peace of mind. Yes there are scams out there but go on your gut feeling about a person. Apparently it only takes random acts of kindness to change the world.

When I first moved to London I gave people money in these circumstances at least once. I suspected it was a scam but didn't like the idea of leaving someone stranded if it was genuine.

Now I'm old and cynical and just say no. A few weeks ago a smartly dressed woman stopped me outside leafy Kew Gardens tube station. She was clutching her car keys and said her car had broken down, she'd come out without her wallet and needed to collect her daughter from school. It was pretty obvious to me it was a scam.

The best line I ever heard was 'please give me some money so I can go and get drunk'. I stopped and gave the man a small sum and we chatted for a while. I found his honesty most refreshing.

  • Yes I would give her the £3.00. If it is a con I have only lost £3.00 but if it is a genuine request then I have helped someone in a difficult situation. If I did not have the money on me or only notes then I would suggest that she approaches station staff and explain her predicament and ask if she could send them the money as soon as she could.
  • I would go to the ticket machine/desk and buy the ticket for her.
I would not give her the cash directly. Who knows what it could be used for which isn't a train ticket.
