Ethernet produces a more stable connection and uses a lot less power than USB

yes :o i have laptop so if im connected im active, it is not left on whilst i not using

I meant _party_ active active - changing pages and typing not just reading and browsing ...

may be your laptop powering down your usb ports to save power.

Have a look in control panel and power settings ( via classic view ) - set it to be always on.

Next have a look in device manager ( earlier post ) and the usb/modem tabs probably under the advanced buttons and see what power they are taking and if set to be turned off by computer to save power.
    Rich people save then spend.
Poor people spend then save what's left.

USB was designed for attaching peripherals - printers, cameras, scanners etc

    Ethernet is a networking technology

Serial Ports used to be for comms and hence connecting modems but were superceded by USB technology so USB modems appeared and then adsl modem ( really routers )

So using usb for adsl ( another networking tech.) is a bit of a hash

The USB's Universal Serial Bus are at the bottom of the tree f09zs01_big.jpg

And the modem will be in control panel (classic view ) phones and modems. Different drivers have different tabs/buttons etc - so have a look around

MS have a reg workaround see workaround - if you are feeling brave

    "WORKAROUND
Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To prevent this problem for server products where power management is not important or required, you can disable the selective suspend feature of USB. To do this, you must modify the following registry entry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\USB
    Entry: DisableSelectiveSuspend
    Type: DWORD
Value: 1 disables selective suspend. 0 enables selective suspend
Note If this registry key is not present, you must create it.

This setting affects all USB host controller drivers in the system. If the DisableSelectiveSuspend value is set to 1, the selective suspend feature is turned off and the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power check box does not appear on the Power Management tab for the USB Root Hub."

I know you have not got a server.... but here is some light reading on the matter http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/reskit/c09621675.mspx :o
