yes - I do this all the time. one chicken is enough for dinner for me and OH - but we dont always want to eat chicken the next day or the day after! so I sometimes do some slices and freeze them (sandwiches) or strip the chicken in chunks (curries usually). defrost in the fridge overnight and its like using the chicken next day!

Yes, freeze whatever you can. I freeze the empty carass too, then when I have two or three in the freezer I have abif stock making session. Then I freeze the stock too.

The bb date will apply to when the raw chicken should be cooked. Once it's cooked, chilled and stored properly it should be fine to keep for three days, although as always, use your senses to check if it's ok and look, smell and taste a little bit before eating.

  • I roasted a chicken on Monday that I was planning to turn into a pie to freeze. But I have to go away for a few days and won't be back til Friday.

Can I freeze the chicken, defrost to make a pie, heat, then freeze again? Or is this dodgy? Alternatively if I leave it in the fridge til Friday, will it still be OK to make the pie then and then freeze it?

    Thanks

    Hi luckycat,

You can freeze cooked chicken, but only once, so I'm afraid that your idea of freezing it then defrosting and turning it into a pie to be frozen might not be advisable. The general rule is that you can freeze raw chicken once and then defrost and cook and freeze it once.

As it was cooked on Monday I wouldn't advise keeping it in the fridge until Friday, but it's up to you to decide whether or not you want to. My personal rule is to keep cooked chicken in the fridge for three days max.

Is there any way that you could make the pie filling today with the freshly cooked chicken and then freeze it so that you can defrost it and use it when you want to use it?

These threads have more advice that may help:

How long does cooked chicken keep for?

I'll add your thread to the first link later to keep the suggestions together.

  • I have cooked a previously frozen chicken. We now have leftovers that I want to make into a pie (chicken will be reheated during process of making pie) I then want to freeze the pie and reheat portions as needed - so the chicken will have been heated three times. Is this ok?

  • I have made a chicken pie with mashed potato, and cooked chicken. I have made an extra portion but wasn't sure if I could freeze it? Normally we just eat the lot but I'm trying to stretch the chicken. Making Stock at the moment too!!

Thank you in anticipation ... x
