Curry_Queen wrote:I was also a victim of the Halifax switching my card to Electron and then refusing to upgrade to a debit card so I left and opened an account with Lloyds. I had to wait 3 months so they could monitor my account before being given a full Visa Debit card, but it was well worth the wait.
does the lloyds basic account give you a debit card at all ?
even an electron/solo with another bank has got to be better than sticking with halifax
they are terrible IMO0 -

Lloyds Basic Account:Features & Benefits
*
Cash withdrawals from any of the 4,200 Lloyds TSB Cashpoint® machines and over 17,000 Post Office branches.
*
Paying bills using direct debit and standing orders.
*
Online banking to check your balance and transactions.
*
Making general enquiries using the Basic Bank account phone service.
The Basic Bank account doesn’t include:
*
overdrafts and loans,
*
cheque books,
*
withdrawals from any non-Lloyds TSB cash machine,
*
withdrawals from branch counters for less than £200 in any one day. The maximum amount that can be withdrawn from Lloyds TSB Cashpoint® machines is £200 per day.
It looks like all you get is a cashcard with the basic account. You'd be better off applying for a Classic account to be honest as even if you don't qualify immediately for the Visa Debit card you'll definitely get an Electron card and you can re-apply for the Visa Debit after 3 months once they see how your account is being run."An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

Hello,
I hope this will help some of you, with regards to using your Electron card online.
My mum has one of these, and as someone said, often uses online, and enters her number where it says visa credit card.
You can also use your Electron to open a Paypal account, a lot of sites do accept payment with paypal, and also Amazon take Electron, as do CDwow.com and plenty more, so its not all that bad. I have a Delta debit card and she uses her Electron all the places I use mine
Kindest Regards,

Solo is a separate company - the sister company to Switch (which is now part of MasterCard International, hence the name change to Maestro). Electron is part of Visa International so some of the banks might be changing from what might be part of MasterCard, to an offering from Visa (Electron). I know that Bank of Scotland has moved away from Switch/Maestro to Delta instead - that could be why they're changing their Solo cards to Electron as Delta/Electron are part of Visa.
