  • Ordered a PC monday night, dispached today, although will probably sit around in Ireland for a few days.
  • it's the full OEM version if that makes sense - you get the same with all Dells - basically just the full XP home cd (not a recovery cd) and a little A5 size getting started booklet sealed in plastic, and is legal to sell on as long as you include a piece of hardware (see earlier post)
  • So if there is no such chip (2.6 CEL 400FSB 256k cache) have I got grounds to complain for an upgrade if they send me out the standard 2.6/400/128k??? :P

Anyone else have the same mistake on the PDF?
    Yes,256k listed with my PDF.

  • Not sure if this still works but you should give it a try....

If you actually READ the Microsoft T&C when you load windows for the first time it states somthing along the lines of: if you do not accept these T&C please click cancel and return software to vendor for a full refund.

At which point you click cancel phone DELL and tell them that after carefully reviewing the T&C you decided you do not agree with Mircrosoft and are going to remove the software from your machine and use linux instead. Please refund me the OEM cost of Windows

Unless Microsoft has changed thier T&C's from XP when it first was released then this is 100% legal.

Unfortunatly all dell's first show you another licence on boot up from dell, which takes the line that basicly if you don't want windows, you have to return the whole machine...

  • Could someone please clarify how MS keeps track of the registration of XP. When I was recently in HK I saw - but did not buy- fake XP packs which all had the same registration key. Is the key not a use once only ?

I have bought two computers each pre-loaded with XP and nver had to register. I assume that I am not entitled to install the XP on a new machine (even if I scrapt the old) but what would physcially stop me ?

MS current policy is that when you install you do an online or over the phone registration. The software generates a unique code based on your hardware and combines it with the licence key. This is then sent to MS (if you don't unless you have hacked version of windows it will stop working after 2 weeks), who put in in the database and normally allow the machine to continue.

However this code is composed of sections pertaining to your hard disks, processor, motherboard, video card, network card and modem. If you change too many all at once you have to re-register. If you have registered with adifferent setup more than 4 times (I think) in the last couple of months then you system will not be registered and your machine will not allow you into windows...

Of course microsoft could change the rules at any time, as these are not offically published.

Oh and of course they can work out who you are when you register even if you don't fill in your address details (if they want to) so using hacked codes is not advisable.
