Sadly, there is little that can be done in law abut him killing your cat,

If/when the Dog Control Bill comes in, there could be in the future, but sadly, not yet.:-

    2. Control Of Dogs

    No person shall-

    (e) keep a dog that has attacked a person or another animal.

RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

I'm so sorry about your cat. My husband bought me 2 kittens before Xmas as he is away a lot and thought they would be good to keep me company while he is away. My house is right next to a main road so they aren't allowed out as I'm petrified of one or both getting hurt, I have high fences around my back yard and the bottom of the fence has been covered with bricks to stop them getting out on the off chance they dart out the door when you've got your arms full (they have a habit of knowing when the best opportunity is to dart out the door!!) I let them out if I'm outside but never on they're own. I know some people see animals as just that, but because I spend so much time on my own they do become a very important part of your family, I have had them since Nov and they mean just as much to me as my human family!!
I hope you can get something sorted for the dog, I don't agree with killing it but I think the owners should be fined/prosecuted for letting they're animal roam unsupervised.
    Take care

I think if this comes in then it will criminalise a lot of innocent dog owners. My dog has attacked another dog but only because its been attacked by several other dogs and is terrifed of other dogs now. Dog Control Orders will also mean that councils can stop you from walking your dog (regardless if you clean up after the dog or have it on a lead) anywhere they want. This is not so bad for people who live in or have access to rural areas but if you live in a city and your local playing field is the only bit of grass you can walk your dog and a dog control order phobits walking dogs on this area your be very restricted.

The problem is that at the end of the day these soft furry bundles of joy are animals and that animal instinct will mean they attack other animals. Its terrible the cat was killed by the dog but how many birds had the cat killed? There seems to be no tears shed for them.

Dog owners should be made liable for their dog straying out of their control but not for killing other animals.

I'm so sorry your cat was killed and that you had to witness this. The very least the dog owners could do would be to reimburse all the expense you've suffered because of their negligence.
I have a whippet cross that caught a cat while out in open country once. We managed to intervene and the cat was ok but most dogs see cats and rabbits as fair game when running free. This in no way means that she is nasty with people.....she is a very gentle dog. I have to add that this same dog lives quite happily in the house with a cat and a rabbit.........somehow it's different circumstances.
I totally agree that no dog should be allowed to wander causing danger to other people and to itself, and there should be tough penalties for people who allow this to happen.
I hope that you are recovering from the shock and upset and that your hand is healing well.

extremely sorry to hear this - i would definitely go round to the 'owners' house and tell them graphically what happened and explain that the matter has been reported to the Police.

Sorry to hear about your cat. Just had to say please be very careful about the cat bites in your hand and make sure the wounds don't get too infected. I got bitten by a cat on my hand (just one tooth broke the skin) and the infection got so bad that I had to have 3 operations in one week to save my hand. The infection still rotted through a tendon and I needed over 50 physio sessions to try to get movement back.

The surgeon told me that cats mouths are a sewer (much worse than dogs, but cleaner than humans) so please keep a close watch on your wounds.

How horrible for you. My bites seem to be healing ok, just the tip of one finger doesn't seem to have a lot of movement in it but am hoping that will get better once the swelling goes down.

I think it was just a terrible set of circumstances really. Michy was old and slow if she had seen the dog in time and had been more agile she probably would have been able to outrun it. My car was parked right next to where the attack happened, a younger cat would have just jumped on the car. Michy couldn't even jump on the sofa. It didn't help either that the gardens aren't fenced in, because it is private land we are only allowed to have post and rail fences so anything and everything can wander through, even so the dog still shouldn't have been in my garden.

I just feel very sad at the voilent way she died and angry with the owners who obvoiusly don't have any regard for others.

We have a alot of wildlife here which I'm very aware of. It is heavily wooded and there are many lakes, some used for fishing. I moved here from town where the cats inpact on the wildlife was minimal, here it is different, for that reason I won't be adding to the two cats I already have.

Incidently, the fishing baliff here has a dog that has always been allowed to roam, he gets on fine with all the cats here, doesn't bother them at all, yet it has caught and killed wild rabbits and ducks. I think its worth remembering that although cats do kill wildlife so do some dogs also.
  • I'm so sorry for what your poor cat had to go through. I get really annoyed when authorities arent interested in what happens to cats and they think that dogs are somehow more important.

I came on here looking for advice because my cat has gone missing and i've been out looking for him all day. The guy across the street has a rotwieler dog (if thats how you spell it) and he lets it run about loose, it was running about outside earlier on about the same time as my cat went missing and im petrified incase something has happened to him. The owner of the dog is the type of person that would just dispose of the cat and keep his mouth shut for fear of getting in trouble if anything like that were to happen. Its the first time Misty has ever been out of the house and he is scared of his own shadow so i know something has probably happened to him.

    Hello little miss morrisey,

I couldn't read and run, so thought you might like to see this thread about what to do if you cat is missing:

    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1364465&highlight=missing+cat

The advice from spookylukey half way down the page is pretty good. If you use the search function on this forum you will get some more relevant threads. Also, why not post your own thread asking for ideas - just click the new thread link at the top of the page.

Good luck - I really hope you find your kitty, I know how precious they are!
